If there is a manhole at top of boiler and one at bottom, which one would you open first? Think about it! Hot air rises. Heat travels in convection currents. If you were to open bottom manhole first and top manhole later, you will create a channel for flow of hot air. Hot air from remaining steam will rise up very quickly and overwhelm you if you are at top manhole. So always, open top manhole first, followed by bottom manhole. that steam going through soot blower is dry. 3. Once steam is considered dry, drain valve is shut off, and soot blower is turned. Most soot blowers are constructed in such a way that when it is rotated, a steam port is uncovered and steam can enter into it. 4. The steam shoots out from soot blower tube that is inside boiler fireside. Many small holes for steam to emerge are drilled along length of tube. As tube rotates, position of steam jet will also move with it. After a full rotation, all areas around soot blower tube should be clear of soot. (However, it depends on how thick soot is, speed at which soot blower is rotated, and how efficient soot blowing is) 5. After completing soot blowing, steam supply is shut off again.The operation of soot blower can be done manually or by remotely controlled motor drive. A motor driven soot blower will usually include some means of turning manually in case motor fails. The soot that is blown away from heat transfer surfaces of boiler will be carried together with hot gases out through chimneystack.
