Seeing what these writers, ballplayers and managers have to say about these players lights up page for me. I can visualize these players on field hitting home runs, running with arms outstretched to catch a ball or throwing out a would be base runner trying to steal a base.

Seeing a batter leaning one way and then calling pitch that I thought would get him out was one strategy I successfully used. Striking out a batter was a joint effort between pitcher and I. I felt it was my job to study batter and then relay any useful information I got, back to pitcher.

My stock as a catcher increased when pitcher pitched well. I felt I had to find weakness in batter. That was part of my job. And then calling game was essence of being a catcher.

If there was a background check on all catchers that ever played, I think there is one thing that would be common. They all studied game.
