Your Website Could be Letting You Down.Written by John Sheridan
Your Website Could be Letting You Down!A professionally presented business website is a powerful and essential marketing tool: it's first thing prospective customers will look at before they decide to contact you. If copy on your website is not written to an acceptable standard, it may be losing you customers. It’s not enough just to have amazing graphics and imagery: you need words to make it complete. Is spelling correct? Are punctuation marks in place? Does copy make sense? These are questions that website designers should be asking themselves before they upload a new site. One of biggest flaws with website copy is inconsistency: for example word ‘website’. Some sites spell it as one word, some as two words; as far as I am aware both are acceptable, but not both versions on same site! In my opinion, a lack of consistency will deter a significant amount of would-be customers from using services of a company that has not taken trouble to proofread their website. Poor spelling on a website is another costly but avoidable mistake. The majority of visitors will leave site very quickly if they find too many spelling errors. This again will give them impression that site owners don’t really care; and they would be right! I am also convinced that copy that has been ‘padded out’ with insignificant trivia is also a big turn-off for visitors – clear, concise and informative is order of day.

1. Avoid creating menu on left-hand side of a website . If unavoidable, an alternative way is to put some text with rich keywords at top or above left-hand menu so that this text will be first thing to read by search engines. 2. Headlines are rated more important than rest of web page by search engines . To take advantage of this, you should have your keywords in page headline. Since header tag (h1) is quite large, you should format it to make it smaller. 3. Every page should contain “title” and “description” tags with good keywords to describe page content. The number of words for title should not exceed 9 and that for description should not be more than 20 words in order to keep within limits of most search engines. 4. Try not to use Flash when possible . Flash cannot be read by search engines to date and will cause slow page loading time and makes people run away 5. Think twice on how to use graphics . Make them relevant to your content and use an Alt tag containing relevant keyword(s). 6. Do not only use images to link out . You should always use text links to link out to important content on your web site. Spiders can follow image links, but like text links more though.
