Now that you have seenrepparttar emotional and temporal Passion Of The Christ produced by Mel Gibson, take a trip torepparttar 133662 high plains for an even more emotional, positive, and enlightening live theatrical production aboutrepparttar 133663 last seven days of Christ — The Black Hills Passion Play.

June 1, 2004 markedrepparttar 133664 opening performance ofrepparttar 133665 65th anniversary season ofrepparttar 133666 Black Hills Passion Play in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The play, which came torepparttar 133667 U.S. from Germany, was first presented inrepparttar 133668 "Queen City" ofrepparttar 133669 Black Hill's magnificent amphitheatre in 1939, and has been in performance ever sincerepparttar 133670 founder, Josef Meier, became one ofrepparttar 133671 tourism pioneers ofrepparttar 133672 state, and who received much national and international recognition for his work inrepparttar 133673 outdoor drama.

The Passion Play also toured for over thirty years, playing indoors in theaters and civic auditoriums throughoutrepparttar 133674 U.S. and Canada. It once had a winter home in Lake Wells, Florida, inrepparttar 133675 middle of an orange grove.

Well known as one ofrepparttar 133676 oldest Passion Plays inrepparttar 133677 U.S.,repparttar 133678 production has been seen by over 10 million people. With performances three nights a week during June, July, and August, repparttar 133679 Passion Play features a cast of professional actors who speakrepparttar 133680 oratory parts, along with nearly 100 extras from Spearfish churches, who all dramatize Christ's last days.

I grew up in Spearfish, and duringrepparttar 133681 summer months I was a Passion Play extra, and what a thrill it was, even though we participated for donuts and drinks. I learned how to wrap a turban, pickedrepparttar 133682 most colorful costumes, and fought overrepparttar 133683 best sandals withrepparttar 133684 other kids.

Once I was a camel tender, another time a Roman standard bearer, and then a Roman guard, and always inrepparttar 133685 mob scene up to Golgotha, repparttar 133686 most stirring scene inrepparttar 133687 play — The Crucifixion. One night real lightning shot throughrepparttar 133688 skies aroundrepparttar 133689 cross Josef Meier was hanging from, andrepparttar 133690 actors showed passionate fear running downrepparttar 133691 hill, many tripping, and it was as if transported back two millennium. The play came alive that evening.

In conjunction withrepparttar 133692 65th Anniversary milestone, repparttar 133693 Passion Play company is planning a number of special events, including museum and backstage tours ofrepparttar 133694 USA's largest outdoor stage. A special visit torepparttar 133695 animal pens is a great photo opportunity forrepparttar 133696 kids.

While 65 years is a long run for a drama like this, repparttar 133697 production's root actually runs much deeper. Originally it was a German play first staged in Luenen, Germany, presented byrepparttar 133698 Monks ofrepparttar 133699 Cappenberg Monastery. As early as 1242 they staged a reenactment ofrepparttar 133700 Resurrection of Easter Sunday. The simple tableau wasrepparttar 133701 foundation of most Passion Plays, evolving as other scenes fromrepparttar 133702 Bible were added. Only a few of those Plays have survivedrepparttar 133703 test of time and are presented to this day —repparttar 133704 most notable is Oberammergau in Germany, which is held only once every ten years.
