Reflected sunlight fromrepparttar water outside dances onrepparttar 133671 chestnut ceiling of my cabinrepparttar 133672 first morning I awaken aboardrepparttar 133673 luxury barge La Belle Époque. I get up to look outrepparttar 133674 open porthole window and am greeted with a friendly squawk. A large white swan approaches expectantly, followed by several mallard ducks. We are eye level with each other. Having no bread to offer, I quickly closerepparttar 133675 window.

After a shower inrepparttar 133676 tiled bathroom and rub-down with a thick nautical blue towel, I head upstairs. On an antique oak sideboard inrepparttar 133677 main salon hostesses Fanny and Barbara have laid out a breakfast of granolas, yogurt, and fresh fruit. While I was still gazing atrepparttar 133678 ceiling of my cabin, Captain Lee had been inrepparttar 133679 village of Auxerre buying fresh baguettes, croissants and pain chocolate.

La Belle Époque is one of several luxury canal barges operated in France by European Waterways. Once a working canal barge, it has been redesigned with both elegance and passenger comfort in mind. The salon is hunter green, rose and mahogany, with comfortable banquettes and vases of fresh flowers. There are a sun-deck, Jacuzzi spa, sauna, fitness studio, and bicycles for guests to ride alongrepparttar 133680 canal paths.

It's a fine fall day in France, still summer inrepparttar 133681 afternoons, with nights that offer a crisp reminder of winter to come. This state-of-the-art hotel barge carries just twelve passengers, with six crew members to take care of every possible passenger need.

Nick, our guide, had picked us up in Parisrepparttar 133682 previous day in front ofrepparttar 133683 Hotel Ampère. A two-hour journey by minivan through rolling French countryside had brought us torepparttar 133684 medieval town of Auxerre, where La Belle Époque and her crew awaited. We enjoyed a champagne welcome accompanied by freshly-baked popovers. After meetingrepparttar 133685 crew and getting settled into our cabins, we exploredrepparttar 133686 cobblestone streets and fashionable shops of Auxerre.

Atrepparttar 133687 junction ofrepparttar 133688 Canal du Nivernais andrepparttar 133689 River Yonne, Auxerre was a pivotal town onrepparttar 133690 ancient north-south road through France. It was a big market town for lumber and wine as well as an important spiritual center. Surrounded by timber-framed buildings are a 15th century tower with a large decorative 17th century clock.

Our first dinner aboard La Belle Époque introducedrepparttar 133691 talents of chef Guy. "Scallops Mating with Snails", followed by a charolet filet with red pepper purée and potatoes gratinée au dauphin. Dessert was shortbread with raspberry coulis. A white St. Veran and a red Aloce Coton (wines ofrepparttar 133692 Burgundy area) accompaniedrepparttar 133693 meal, and we discovered there is no limit torepparttar 133694 number of bottles we may consume.

Penn and Teller make their own brand of magic six nights a week atrepparttar Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Iconoclasts torepparttar 133670 bone, Penn is tall and verbose, Teller, diminutive and silent. Together they are known asrepparttar 133671 Bad Boys of Magic.

Recently, I hadrepparttar 133672 unique, slightly unnerving pleasure of seeingrepparttar 133673 internationally famous duo perform live atrepparttar 133674 Samba Room, repparttar 133675 showroom created especially for them atrepparttar 133676 Rio.

It's 8:30 p.m. andrepparttar 133677 show is scheduled to begin at nine. Hot jazz is being played from stage left. There is no curtain. The stage is awash in a red hue over a bright high gloss red and black checkerboard floor with a thin red frame and Penn and Teller spelled out in flame red against a black backdrop. Audience members are trooping on stage, taking pictures in front of two large empty boxes, one Plexiglas, repparttar 133678 other wood.

"Feel free to open them up and see what they're made of ? but please, for your own safety, do not try to get inside one ofrepparttar 133679 boxes."

It'srepparttar 133680 pianist speaking torepparttar 133681 audience. Mike Jones, as he will later be introduced, is playing jazz on a baby grand Kawai piano while someone wearing a hat, who looks suspiciously like Penn Gillette, is standing next to him playingrepparttar 133682 bass.

I take Jones' invitation and venture up on stage. What a heady feeling. How much fun is this to stand onrepparttar 133683 very stage where magic is about to happen? Like my fellow audience members I liftrepparttar 133684 lid ofrepparttar 133685 Plexiglas box and it seems to be nothing more nor less than it appears. The wooden box is heavy and well constructed. There are no visible clues.

"I'm going to play one more very fast song giving you time to carelessly run on stage and look atrepparttar 133686 two boxes that will be used inrepparttar 133687 box escape challenge tonight." The last group hurries on stage to investigaterepparttar 133688 props, and to capturerepparttar 133689 memory on their digital cameras.

Penn and Teller tickets OnlineNine o'clock rolls around and every seat looks occupied. "That's Jonesy ? our friend ? Penn tellsrepparttar 133690 audience as he and Teller burst ontorepparttar 133691 stage. "This is not your typical Las Vegas show!" he boasts. "Teller and I write our own stuff. We've been doing magic together for thirty years."

Penn and Teller are wearing matching English cut suits with vests, crisp white shirts, and beautiful but unmatched silk ties. Penn sports comfy black shoes, Teller, spats. Aside fromrepparttar 133692 obvious difference in their sizes and personalities, they appear to be benign, well-dressed magicians. Penn playsrepparttar 133693 bass — letting us know he was on stage studying us pre-show, and Teller with his cherubic smile playsrepparttar 133694 vibes.
