Why Orienteering is Hot!Written by Chuck Fitzgerald
So, you didn’t know it was hot did you? Do you even know what Orienteering is? It is one of most thrilling activities available for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and here’s good news – it’s inexpensive. If you enjoy spending time out of doors and you are looking to break out of your regular routine, Orienteering may be challenge you’ve been hoping for. Thousands of men, women and children around country are addicted to mental and physical rush of Orienteering. Let’s find out why.First off, what is Orienteering? Orienteering is an outdoor sport where you use a map and a compass to find your way through a cross-country style course either leisurely or competitively. Here’s basically how it works: By using only a compass and a map, participants will move from one control point to another until reaching end of course. Each participant – an orienteer – uses a special device, a unique one is located at each control point, to mark their scorecard thus proving they have actually visited required control points. The orienteer who reaches finish line first, with all control points visited, is winner. Sounds easy doesn’t it? So what’s catch? There are two main challenges to sport. First, route is not marked. Therefore orienteer must personally navigate from control point to control point using only a compass and a map. To successfully do this, you will always need to know how far you have traveled and in what direction. Their map, provided at event, gives detailed information on terrain such as hills, landmarks, bodies of water and other obstacles. Secondly, to be successful in orienteering, orienteer needs excellent map reading skills, ability to focus mentally and ability to make decisions. If event is competitive, all of this is done as fast as possible.
| | Great Tips for Car Camping EnjoymentWritten by Chuck Fitzgerald
Camping is one of my favorite activities and my favorite type of camping is car camping. However, there are many other types of camping such as base camping, canoe camping, RV camping, tent trailer camping and back yard camping. Regardless of how you spend your time out of doors or how much time you spend out of doors, there is always more to learn. I have compiled an extensive list of camping tips and this installment is for car campers. Here are my favorite tips for getting most out of your car camping experience.Organize your gear before you go. The basic principle is to organize or categorize your gear by "when" and "how quickly" you will need it. When I get to campsite, first thing I do is prepare shelter. So my tent and shade awning are easiest pieces of gear to get to. Plan your campsite. Understand how vehicles, wind, sun and rain will enter campsite. For example, if wind is coming out of west, you’ll probably want your tent and kitchen west of any campfire to reduce smoke nuisance. Always have a first aid kit in camp. Everyone in camp should know where it is, have access to it and know how to use it. I keep mine in plain sight in my kitchen. If it’s locked in my truck, no one can get to it except me. Every camp needs a shovel. I believe a shovel is most important tool in camp. You’ll use it to manage your campfire, leveling sleeping spots and countless other uses. Don’t leave home without it. What tent should you use? I recommend a tent that is bigger than you think you’ll need. If inclement weather sets in, you’ll have a spot out of elements for reading and playing games. My tent is big enough for two people, two cots, two chairs and two dogs.
