Let me ask you a question ... if you had a pain in your side,

would you let your neighbour whip out your appendix?

Of course you wouldn’t and it wouldn’t matter how many

episodes of E.R. he’d seen!

You’d go to a doctor - an expert in his field. It makes you

wonder why so many people approach friends, relatives and

colleagues for advice about specialist problems, when these

people have no more qualifications than our telly-watching

friend.

Every hour of every day there are problems and questions

you need answered, whatever you’re doing and whatever

your own experience and qualifications.

Here’s a little quiz for you - see if your answers match those

ofrepparttar experts.

I Can't Believe You Said That! Dealing with Controversy

Written by Ron Sathoff

There's a very fine line that we all have to walk when we want to make an argument about a controversial subject: On one hand, you want to limitrepparttar controversy as much as you can, because too much can lead to a lot of problems, ranging from flaring tempers to hurt feelings to broken noses! Onrepparttar 102081 other hand, controversial subjects are usuallyrepparttar 102082 most significant and, many times, repparttar 102083 most useful to discuss.

Many people try to handle controversy by simply avoiding it. Unfortunately, this often leads to bland, wishy-washy arguments that really have nothing to say.

Other people face controversial subjects by bluntly stating their opinion, regardless ofrepparttar 102084 situation orrepparttar 102085 reactions ofrepparttar 102086 audience. These people often call themselves "frank," "candid," "upfront" or "in-your-face" -- but, they are about as effective asrepparttar 102087 people who have nothing to say.

Why? Because, for an argument or a persuasive message to work, there has to be COMMUNICATION. This means there has to be at least one person talking and one person listening. If a message is too blunt or controversial, thenrepparttar 102088 audience has a tendency to "tune out" what is said -- they are too angry, shocked, or outraged to continue paying attention to what you have to say. As soon as they stop listening, communication is over and your message has failed.

How do you prevent this from happening? Well, I have found thatrepparttar 102089 best way to present a controversial subject is to use a method called "proof-to-claim." To use this method, you holdrepparttar 102090 controversial point of your message (your claim) forrepparttar 102091 end of your argument, after you have had a chance to present allrepparttar 102092 information (proof) that supportsrepparttar 102093 claim.

For instance, if you were telling your customers that you were going to have to raise your prices (a controversial subject to all of us who have to pinch pennies!), you would want to talk aboutrepparttar 102094 increased service you will be providing, orrepparttar 102095 increased costs you have been facing BEFORE you say that prices are rising. This allows you to communicate your reasons before your audience gets angry, and therefore, harder to reach. In fact, by holding off onrepparttar 102096 controversial claim, your audience may even come to be more accepting of your message byrepparttar 102097 time you actually have to say those dreaded words -- lesseningrepparttar 102098 negative effects to an acceptable level.
