When looking left or right is not anymore safe.Written by Florie Lyn Masarate
Take a look at this scene: A woman crossing street, looking to her left then to her right. She was on her way crossing street, when a car, careening at top speed down street, hit her then went on its way, leaving blooded woman sprawled on street, dead. Or this: A man hastily crossing street suddenly slipped and fell, in way of an incoming vehicle. He got hit, went flying a few feet, then landed, battered but alive, on pavement, while driver of vehicle rushed over and try to get help… These two scenarios are just some examples of accidents that happen simply by crossing street. This is what is called pedestrian accidents. Road accidents involving pedestrians account for more deaths and casualties in streets worldwide. In most cases, these pedestrians end up dead or suffering serious injuries and damage when they get into this kind of accident. Negligent and dangerous drivers are most commonly pointed causes of these accidents. The victims either get hospitalization and money benefits are usual claims victim gets. Sometimes these are not enough to sustain for them. The most common casualties endured in these accidents are brain injuries, bone fractures, paralysis and coma and not to mention, death. Some pedestrians blame themselves for getting into accident in first place. They feel that it was their fault that they got hit by vehicle. This is usual reaction that victims have because they do not want any further questions about what had happened. Some are even willing to just settle for an amount agreed by both parties.

Alcohol has always been a problem in society then and now. Its negative and drastic effects are attributing to accidents and other misconducts that people under its spell are getting into. What would happen if you combine this with driving? You would get disaster in caps. Drivers are always been warned against drinking and driving or vice versa. Media played its role in campaign agent drunk driving. They show advertisements to emphasize their points. Films were done regarding what happens and what may happen. And real life footages of events involving accidents result of drunk driving. The internet takes on in action, posting articles regarding this, putting pictures too to state their point in pictures. Still, numbers remain. Drunk driving is still rampant. Reports have shown that in United States alone, 17,000 people, in a year, are killed in drunk driving and more than 250,000 injured. When driving, drivers are given full responsibility for whatever their actions may result to. Oftentimes, many innocent people’s lives are taken away by these accidents. It is disconcerting to note that they are victims of another person’s irresponsible doing. Steps have already been made on how to solve this problem. Communities are given awareness in preventing such situations and promoting decrease in number of cases. Police are also given assignments to be on alert for any possible signs of drunk driving, acting before an accident can happen. Punishments are becoming more and more severe in an attempt to somehow minimize these cases.
