What’s in a logo?Written by Florie Lyn Masarate
When you see a red letter “M” with yellow lining, what comes to your mind? McDonalds. Upon seeing a slowly forming castle at beginning of a film, you would know it is from Walt Disney. Other things, persons, organizations that even before their names or appearance, people has instant recognition. What made them so? Their logos.Logos are trademark that represents an organization or a group. They are created for easy and instant recognition. When logos were first used, its main purpose was to give distinction between products of same industry. They were put on labels, tags and packages so people can easily recognize one they preferred. Little did early users of this know that theses logos would define and revolutionize advertising world. The most important thing making a logo is concept. Does it represent exactly what company is about? Be able to determine if it is fitting to company or person. How will people react to it? Making it as eye-catching and as simple as possible to be able to reach out to all types of people. Will it have a lasting effect? It has to be memorable enough for people to not forget them a day after and in years to come. The problem encountered in companies having a successful and well-known logo is that it is difficult for them to change it when time comes. People tend to get used to usual logo that when it had to change with changing time, confusion and misinterpretation is like to happen. Companies made changes but old style is still present, like colors and design, to keep up with what people had gotten to know and used to already. Examples of these are Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Their transition from old to modern logo is not that different, same style is still there.

Let us analyze this in terms of comparison. In olden times, painting takes brushes, watercolors and canvases. Pictures were perfected by professionals who took their time studying and perfecting their craft. Music is for musicians, who took time getting lyrics in their mind and putting it in print. No more brushes and paints, software are now able to create perfect painting with touch click of mouse and innovative program tools. Throwaway pictures can now be made perfect, using only computer, to make it look like a professionally taken photo. Would-be musicians can make music using computer. And designs are enhanced by state-of-the-art equipments to produce one of its kind. This is world today. With computers now so fast and reliable, any task is as easy as child’s play. Digital is quick and efficient. When before, people had to get their hands dirty, make a number of mistakes and use precious time, now it’s opposite. With computers, as many repetition of mistakes as one can possibly make, it does not matter. Corrections can be done instantly. Tasks are like divided into different aids more capable than any human can be. Chemicals that are needed before are now disposed of. No more use for any additional thing as long as you have your computer and brand-new programs and software.
