What is Meditation?Written by Robert Elias Najemy
What is Meditation?Robert Elias Najemy Meditation can be described in hundreds of ways. Here we will give some brief explanations about this so-extremely-important aspect of human harmony, health and spiritual evolution. Three Aspects of Meditation 1. The first step is relaxation or surrendering of body and mind so that mind is not cluttered with various unrelated and disturbing thoughts. 2. The second is concentration on a limited area of mental focus so as to begin to be able to control and direct mind towards chosen "object" of concentration. Thus, if I have chosen to concentrate on Christ, concept of love or energy in my heart center, my mind will not wonder from that point of focus to various other unrelated thoughts concerning my daily life, needs, desires, future and past. 3. The third stage is eventual transcendence of mind, thoughts and all identification with body and personality. We then enter into a state of super-mental union with divine consciousness. These three aspects, RELAXATION, CONCENTRATION and TRANSCENDENCE constitute basis of most meditation techniques. What is Meditation Like? Meditation could be considered any process or abstinence of process, which brings mind into a state of contact with inner self, so that a sense of inner peace and fulfillment ensue. Ordinarily, our minds are constantly preoccupied with feelings, ideas, thoughts, sounds, sights, tastes and sensual experiences. We are focused on working, talking, thinking, analyzing, watching, worrying, solving, studying, dreaming and so on. We are like ships being tossed around by waves of circumstances, external inputs and our subconscious programming. One moment we are happy, elated over a success, a new purchase or an affirming exchange with a loved one. In next moment sadness flows through us - we are tired, depressed with life, bored with work, confined by our family, devastated by heat, frustrated with ourselves, angry at others, or bitter about hardships which life has put upon us. Life is an incessant flow of moods, thoughts and perceptions.

It was early Saturday morning. A new grocery store was having a "Grand Opening" and offering FREE food. A line had started.First in line was Henry Hyperson, an insurance salesman in his forties. Puffing a cigarette, he was nervously tapping his foot. His casual clothes just hung on his skinny frame. His breathing was short and quick. Impatiently, he was fidgeting his cigarette from hand to hand. Second in line was Carol Calmton, a physical education teacher in her thirties. Standing erect her hands were behind her. She had a confident smile on her peaceful serene face. Slim, she had an athletic figure. Her clothes showed good taste. Third in line was Fanny Floppy, a housewife in her twenties. Yawning and sniffling, she had a cold. Her complexion was broken out with pimples and blackheads. The heavy woman had a loud sneeze. She wiped her nose on her sleeve. Then she scratched her head through her curlers. Slouching she looked tired and bored. Her dress was too tight and her slip was showing. Billy, 5 and Susy 7, were hanging on her slip. The manager opened door and announced first three people in line won a FREE cart full of food. Jumping up and down, Henry was ecstatic and emotional. He hugged manager and wanted to run and tell his wife. But he would lose his place in line. Everyone had to calm him down. Carol appreciated opportunity and thanked manager. Smiling, she was grateful and went in to fill her cart. She had a list in hand. Shrugging and yawning, Fanny didn't think it was a big deal. Scratching her rear end, she sniffled. Tired, she wondered in. Billy and Susy were all excited jumping up and down, and pulling their Mother to move faster. In meat section, Henry grabbed hamburger, pork chops, steak, sausage, bacon, spare ribs. In frozen food section he took fish sticks, tater tots, pies, lasagna, ravioli, waffles, onion rings, pizza. He picked up sugar, rolls, muffins, danish. Then it was anchovies, olives, salt, pepper, pickles, mustard. Next he picked up canned peas and corn. In dairy case he got processed cheese food, eggs, milk. After that he took, potato chips, snickers, beer, coffee, 5 cartons of cigarettes, coca cola, vodka, tacos, alka seltzer, sominex, anacin.
