What I’m Giving Up for Lent?Written by Deborah Caruana RN, MES, CPT
This past week being lent and opening of The Passion of Christ (which I probably won’t see, mostly because I can’t bear watching physical violence and I’d be a total wreck during and afterwards). Though I am one who abandoned Catholicism I was raised in, it does still haunt me. Don’t worry I’m not going off into religious rantings. … Having recovered from my trials and tribulations of January I headed into February with a revived passionate verve. I was finally over lingering cold and ready for action. I broke into workout regime, gently not expecting too much of myself after an almost 3 week hiatus. The passion was glowing, a light ember within. As week wore on and I continued to beat my expectations. I tried a little harder and while I was at it added a new cardio regime called High Intensity Interval Training. It is exactly what it sounds like and it can be accomplished in 20 minutes. (I explain it in further detail in next article) Now one client in particular to whom I will give name Jackie has been working with me since late summer and while making excellent fitness gains has not lost weight she has set out to. In fact she has gained a pound or two. So while working out this new cardio regime I invited Jackie to join me With cold weather still lingering, we tended to use her gym more often than not, which is why no one else has been invited. So week one Jackie and I do cardio 3-4 times as well as workout regime. The second week yours truly is feeling infallible. My passion is a red hot ember and I’m out to save fitness world. If Jackie isn’t getting motivated to do her cardio one day I jump in and do more to get Jackie fired up. The upshot of Debs passion being, Deb works out 3 times plus 6cardio days, Jackie 2 workouts +2 cardio. For all my efforts I now have a low grade cold again and have to take myself out of workouts for an entire week. I was just trying to do my best and be my best and I ended up flagellated. I realize now I can’t save fitness industry.
| | Changes in the Face of FitnessWritten by Deborah Caruana RN, MES, CPT
Yes, there have been changes in face of fitness. Literally… changes, are on my face! This is, yet another true confession of a lifestyle fitness coach. During Augusts marginally sweltering heat, while most were off in vacation bliss and splendor, heat of drums were heard in NYC. All who were in know awaited results of your trulys' LIPOSUCTION! What's that? Liposuction! you say! On a trainer, no less! Well, it wasn't your usual Nichole Smith kind of slimming program. No, it was a liposuction of eyes. Medically termed 'blepharoplasty.' It's a procedure where physician removes a small part of fat pad of lower &/or upper lid, allowing for more space so puffiness (water retention) around eyes disappears. My swelling was worst in winter and 'they' say it's probably caused by allergies, heredity, that old culprit gravity and lets not forget age. (Exercise cures everything but eye bubbles!) If your next question is "But why did you do it, Deb?" I thank you for your kindness. But my eyes were only way I gave away my age. And I felt I needed my eyes to match rest of me. If eyes be window to your soul …I'll be first to admit that I'm an old soul. But why wear your soul on your sleeve, er face? Oh oh, there's something else that I have to confess. You know that frown line that kept you doing everything I would tell you, and adding a few more reps than you really wanted to …just because I looked so serious? Well, it's gone! Permanently (hopefully). Don't even think that this will make me easier on any of you. I haven't lost an ounce of seriousness only frown and eye bubbles! So, instead of having continuous ongoing treatments of deadly botox toxin (it's devirulized), I chose to have those muscles clipped. Based on strength of those muscles I hope it doesn't slow down my metabolism too much.
