WARMING UP: TEN EXERCISES FOR FICTION WRITERS

Written by Dr. Erika Dreifus

Would you expect to wake up one morning and successfully run a marathon without any preparation? Would you think it reasonable to sit before a piano and--with little or no practice--play a concerto? Probably not. Why, then, do so many people seem surprised to discover thatrepparttar will to write isn't always enough to overcomerepparttar 129095 blank screen or page? Doesn't it make sense that, like athletes and musicians, writers might benefit from training, too? And that includes warming up—with exercises.

Writing exercises are similar to other warm-ups. They getrepparttar 129096 required "muscles" moving. They introduce you intorepparttar 129097 rhythm ofrepparttar 129098 activity--gradually. And as in other fields, they can often prove energizing and sustaining themselves. Start writing a scene for an exercise and you may find hours have passed and an entire new section of your manuscript has evolved.

Such exercises and prompts can be especially helpful atrepparttar 129099 beginning of a project. Let's say you're just starting to sketch outrepparttar 129100 characters for a story or a novel. But today you find yourself staring at a screen or pad of paper that is stubbornly, resolutely blank. Responding to one ofrepparttar 129101 following questions will not only get you actively writing, but it may also help you learn something new about your character(s).

1. What is this character's name? "Joe" won't do. We need to know if it's Mr. Joe or Dr. Joe or Reverend Joe. If Joe isrepparttar 129102 full first name. What's Joe's middle name. His last name. Any stories/history behind his name. 2. Where and when didrepparttar 129103 character begin elementary school? Describe that first day.

When I say free ezine advertising, I'm not talking aboutrepparttar free ezine ads that some publishers offer, this technique is FAR more powerful than that.

One ofrepparttar 129093 best ways to get free traffic to your site, is to write articles for ezines.

Now before you shudder and click away, it isn't that hard to write a good article.

If you've got a bout of writers block, just search for info related torepparttar 129094 subject you want to write about, then re-write it in YOUR OWN words and style, do not copy.

Your article needs to be around 500 - 700 words, with short paragraphs, 5 or 6 sentences.

DON'T try and disguise an advert as an article and forget about putting in your affiliate links, publishers will delete it straight away, if you want to use this approach to promote an affiliate program, you should really get your own domain as it looks more professional.

Once you have put your masterpiece together, leave it a day, then come back to it and re-read it, you'll be surprised what other nuggets of info pop out after a nights sleep, and how many errors seem to jump out at you.
