Using Natural Skincare to combat Allergies & EczemaWritten by K. McCafferty
Using Natural Baby Skin Care to combat Eczema and Allergies By Karen McCafferty All my life I have been a girl of self indulgence. I just loved baths, creams and body sprays, with one major problem, I was severely allergic to those chemical laden products, and was left using so called pure soaps that still left me with dry skin that was often accompanied by a rash. With a chemistry and nursing background, I soon learned enough about skin conditions and chemical makeup of some of those product out on market. I knew that I could enjoy my baths & creams once again by making it all myself. I started off just making some simple soaps and mineral baths. The difference in my skin, especially on my face was incredible. Next I began working on cream recipes that would combat excess oil problem I have. With my own little creations done, I was thrilled to indulge once again. Because I know that I am not only woman in world that loves to pamper herself, my little creations made excellent birthday and other holiday gifts. Soon these gifts turned into gifts for friends of friends. People kept telling me that I should be in business, as my products were great. Sure I thought, I was already working a ‘real job’ and knew I simply did not have time to start my own business. Eventually, while on maternity leave from work, Spring Rain Botanicals ( www.springrainbotanicals.com ) was officially born. Pregnant with my first child I was both excited and scared as most of us are with first baby on way. With my nursing background I know implications of having chemicals cross blood barrier via placenta. Pregnant for first time, I was amazed to learn what suddenly can become a toxin to your unborn child. Most of us know of obvious, like cigarette smoke. Have you ever thought of effects, whether short or long term, of chemicals in your skincare products? Probably because I have always had to be so careful in what I choose to apply to my body, I have thought about those chemicals. Since I was already making my own skin care I knew that I could also make things I needed for my pregnancy and childbirth. I created rich belly butter to combat stretch marks and leg cramp cream to combat my sciatica problems. Breastfeeding my child was important to me, and listening to other moms I know of impending problems I could have. So needless to say a Nipple ointment that would protect AND heal would be essential to my life. When my first child came along, I knew there was a good chance that he too would have my remarkable DNA for being allergic to everything. I had also made decision to use cloth diapers on my children and needed a product that would wash off cloth well, if you have tried any zinc creams you will know they do not wash off without allot of effort. I started off making a diaper area and all over body cream. I researched constantly to come up with most beneficial ingredient that would make this cream actually be effective. Shea Butter would definitely be answer. Rich in vitamins A and E, as well as essential fatty acids, Shea butter would not only heal skin but protect it as well. Now there is no reason to be so concerned about protecting baby’s delicate skin if you are going to turn around and use those commercial wipes made with drying alcohol on your little angel. So here too I developed an all natural baby wash made with a pure herbal derivative of lavender. Not once did my son ever have a diaper rash or heat rash. His skin always looked fresh, clear, and he always smelled nice, best of all it was done naturally. Living in a world of chemical laden products, excessive pollution and overuse of pesticides, I was determined not only to help keep my children’s allergies suppressed but to also give them as pure of a start to life as possible. Realistically, majority of allergies that we have are to chemicals and pollution that we live with on a daily basis. Because his hair was so thick, and he was born with lots of it, cradle cap was also an issue we had to deal with. Professionals kept recommending baby oil to remove buildup of skin. Baby Oil is a mineral oil. Essentially a petroleum by-product. Yuck. So again with a little research I read about benefits of Grapeseed oil. This oil is rich in vitamins E, C, beta carotene, as well as omega fatty acids. Great for all skin types, and famous for cell regeneration and moisturizing. Not only was this oil loosening dry skin scales, but when I applied it to his hair it absorbed right into his skin. I didn’t have ‘greasy head’ concern with this amazing oil. It’s quick absorption also told me it was going to work where it was needed.
| | Why Choose Naturopathic Medicine?Written by Dr. Tara Barker ND
Why Choose Naturopathic Medicine?Naturopathic medicine is a system and philosophy of medicine that has been around for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Before advent of ‘conventional’ medicine, which uses a wide variety of drugs and surgical procedures, almost every doctor learned how to use herbs, minerals, homeopathy, and other natural methods to treat disease. Since early 1900’s and with discovery of antibiotics, usage and public knowledge of naturopathic medicine has declined. This was most likely due to ‘quick fix’ nature of many of new drugs developed and increased safety of surgical procedures. Diseases such as influenza and measles, which today are generally nuisances and easily treated in most people, were very scary and sometimes life threatening in these earlier times. The plague literally plagued people. Today we are blessed with better opportunities for proper nutrition, hygiene, and information about these diseases, all of which lessen threat of many of more common diseases becoming life threatening. The attraction that people had towards conventional medicine was and is understandable. Treatments that decrease symptoms of a disease are often well received by patients who are dealing with a troublesome condition. Most advances in technology are viewed as progress and people want best, especially where their health or that of their loved ones is concerned. The problem that came with this flux towards conventional medicine was that it was new and no one knew what side effects or long-term effects of using synthetic drugs would be. Also, most people abandoned more natural methods of health care and stopped caring for themselves in a way that would keep them strong and vital. Instead they began using pills and surgery as ‘fixes’ when things went wrong. They began to eat more processed foods that have fewer vitamins and minerals. Our environment became more polluted. Most doctors know little about nutrition, how or what to eat, or what to do with people affected by environment. As well, more scientific medicine gets, less people understand it. This leads to people feeling ignorant about health matters and leaving all power in their doctor’s hands. So, here we are today. When people feel sick or know something is wrong, they make an appointment and usually get a prescription. If that doesn’t work, another prescription is tried. If a person is lucky, they get sick very infrequently and live healthy lives. Complications arise when treatments given don’t work or cause side effects that need another treatment to lessen them. What happens if you have allergies, asthma, and diabetes? How many prescriptions do you take? What if drugs given interact with each other or cause a nutritional deficiency? What about people who are on a drug for rest of their lives? What about people with chronic diseases that have been told they have no cure but symptoms can be ‘managed’? What causes many of above problems is philosophy of medicine used. The focus should not be (however contrary it may sound) how to get rid of whatever ails you, but why it began. If you can find out what causes your disease and why it began for you, it is entirely possible to foster your health in such a way that your body heals itself. It does little good to get rid of an ear infection in your child if it returns again. Why take an antiviral daily to suppress herpes outbreaks when this can be done with lifestyle and natural methods that do same thing while enhancing your immunity? If you have advanced heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, what feelings of hope do you have that your life can be enhanced? If you take medications daily, perhaps in increasing doses, for rest of your life with your only hope to have better or stable lab test results, that doesn’t sound like quality life you could be having. Did you know that with changes to your lifestyle and natural therapies you could increase energy you feel as well as possibly reverse many of damaging changes you now live with?
