Written by Ryan Fyfe

On December 26, 2004 a massive tsunami swept through Thailand killing thousands of people, and changingrepparttar lives of thousands more. Althoughrepparttar 137802 Tsunami happened months ago, we are still feelingrepparttar 137803 affects of it today.

The massive destruction that occurred because ofrepparttar 137804 tsunami has a huge impact today. Thousands of villagers in Thailand who live on a very low income to begin with lost all they had inrepparttar 137805 tsunami, asrepparttar 137806 water took it away or destroyed it altogether. These are villagers who are having an incredibly hard time now trying to scrape by and replace what it isrepparttar 137807 tsunami took from them.

Agriculturally Thailand was hit very bad withrepparttar 137808 tsunami as well. Where water was reported to have traveled 7-8 miles inland farms are suffering loss of crops and livestock, asrepparttar 137809 salt that remains on their fields isn’t producingrepparttar 137810 crops that are needed to support themselves and their families.

Why I love Stockholm - A Top-10 of Reasons

Written by Marc A. De Jong

Although I was always attracted torepparttar mysterious North, it took a while before I first visited Sweden. Actually, it was my editor who asked me to go there. In 1990 I attended a conference near Stockholm, and fell in love with bothrepparttar 137788 country and its capital.

Since thenrepparttar 137789 city has become a dear friend of mine. Maybe even a relative, as every new visit feels like a sort of homecoming. Stockholm never lets me down.

Nevertheless, my love forrepparttar 137790 Swedish capital does raise an eyebrow when I mention it to others. Most people simply don't know anything about Stockholm, except that it'srepparttar 137791 capital of Sweden.

So let's clear things up. Here is a Top-10 of reasons why I love Stockholm - listed in no particular order.

  • Stockholm is blue. If there is one thing that makes Stockholm stand out, then it is its relationship with water. The city was built on 14 islands, all connected with bridges for cars AND pedestrians, and you never have to walk far to get a stunning view overrepparttar 137792 water.
  • Stockholm is like Swedish design: it's functional and almost definesrepparttar 137793 latest trends, yet it looks great and shows respect for history. The city is very easy to navigate, has everything a big city should offer - excellent shopping facilities, a vibrant nightlife, great business opportunities - but never loses its beauty.
  • The city has an atmosphere that is so calm and relaxed compared to other capitals. I don't know why, really. Maybe it'srepparttar 137794 mentality ofrepparttar 137795 people. Most Swedes are friendly, patient, quiet - and helpful. Maybe it's because there are so many open spaces, water and parks. Or becauserepparttar 137796 houses are so colorful. Maybe it's all of this together.
  • Stockholm has great tourist attractions, but never feels touristy. Even inrepparttar 137797 most popular part of town -repparttar 137798 historical Old Town or Gamla Stan - there are enough quiet streets to make a relaxing stroll.
  • Stockholm is green. About one third of Stockholm consists of parks. One third! It isrepparttar 137799 first city inrepparttar 137800 world to have a national park withinrepparttar 137801 city borders. Yes, a nature reserve right inrepparttar 137802 heart of a capital with 1.5 million people. And all of these parks are accessible.
