Travel To Russia - Vladivostok, Russian “Lord of the East”Written by Marina Smiley
To many world-wide travelers seeking adventure, Russian Far East is a very desirable place to visit, and of course if you are going to visit this region, you do not want to miss seeing famous sea port, Vladivostok.Vladivostok, meaning “Lord of East” in Russian, is located just across Sea of Japan but a very distant 6,200 miles east of Moscow. Interestingly, this beautiful sea port city was so far from center of communist rule, when Russia was better known as Soviet Union, that it was not until 1954 that a leader of USSR visited this city. I am talking about Nikita Khrushchev, a man who became famous, worldwide, for his eccentric statements and actions. He was first one to call Vladivostok “Russian San-Francisco” which in many ways is a fairly accurate comparison. Like San Francisco, city of Vladivostok is located on a hilly region surrounded by a bay, in this case Gold Horn Bay Visitors who arrive to this city enjoy spectacular view, which is surprisingly similar to San Francisco. Vladivostok is also home port of Russian Navy’s pacific fleet, and there are hundreds of military ships and submarines located in Gold Horn Bay. As a result of this, city of Vladivostok was a closed region for more than 70 years. Vladivostok was city for a military installation, and even Russian citizens wanting to visit relatives, were forbidden to travel to this city without special permits and passes. It was not until year of 1992 that Vladivostok was officially opened for foreign visitors as well as rest of Russian population. Today thousands of tourists from all over world travel to Vladivostok. Some take wonderful 7 day journey from Moscow on Trans Siberian Railway, while others prefer to travel to Japan or China, and finally finishing their adventure by arriving at Russian “Lord of East”. Many travelers make exciting journey by ship, going to every worlds’ major sea port including Vladivostok.

Among mysteries of Russian language there is an expression “Sitting on Kamchatka” which in school slang, this idiom means, “to sit in back row of classroom, far enough from teacher’s strict gaze. This geographical idiom originates from Kamchatka region of Far East, one of remotest areas from Moscow, Russian center. So everything connected with Kamchatka suggests something as remoteas can be. At present however, effect of this expression is fading away. The engine of progress launches new regions in tourist race, bringing travelers to any place of world and Kamchatka is a one more huge, well-equipped cosmodrom. Visitors from all over world can catch joy and fascination from travelling to this wonderful place. Interesting as it may seem, this very remote region of vast Russia is in fact twice as big as England! This unique place offers you experiences of: Travelling to active volcanoes and crater exploration. One of most thrilling routes runs to Klyuchevskoy volcano (4750 m), highest active volcano in Europe and Asia. Climbing to top of Klyuchevskoy volcano and studying volcanic processes in crater and on slopes are of both scientific and adventuresome. Mountaineers and visitors can try organized climbing. Vast wilderness areas and abrupt landscape, changing from fairytale woods to science-fiction moonlike landscapes are sure to leave a strong and lasting impression. One may wish to visit other volcanoes just as exciting and terrific: Avachinsky Hill (2741 m), Plosky Tolbachik (3085 m) and Ostry Tolbachik (3682 m) and a variety of others. Thermal Springs and The Valley of Geysers were discovered in April, 1941. Travellers on entering a narrow passageway between snowy rocks decided to have a rest and made themselves comfortable on a steep snow-capped hill. There was a thawed patch on opposite shore with covered by a hazy fog and suddenly a spurt of hot water shot straight towards them! Today thermal springs are definitely one of world’s great wonders. A precious natural relic one can find and seeing it will be an experience. There are over 20 big geysers in Valley: Velikan(Giant), Zhemchuzhny (Pearly), Sakharny (Sugary), Troynoy (Triple), Konus (Cone), Fontan (Fountain) and Maly (Small). There are geysers that gush forth every 10-12 minutes, while others may erupt once in 4-5 hours. The wreathes of steam, fountains of boiling water, incredible colours of slopes, hot water streaming along them and profuse greenery of grasses and trees make an enchanting show. As a rule one can try salmon fishing from May till October. There are two kinds of salmon fishing: spinning fishing and fly-fishing. In Kamchatka you may fish various salmon species such as king salmon, silver salmon and chum and sockeye and pink salmon. Impressive, yes?
