Till It Shines--Pope John Paul II Rides Into Chicago

Written by Roger Wright

“Till It Shines”

Connecting Pope John Paul II and Bob Seger

No one ever askedrepparttar Pope, back when he visited us here in Chicago first in 1979, to climb on a motorcycle and with white robes flying, ruddy face beaming, waving and genuflecting torepparttar 126418 crowd; chug proud, loud and smiling on up Milwaukee Avenue.

Bob Seger inrepparttar 126419 background as The Pope climbs up on Harley:

“Took a look down a westbound road Right away I made my choice”

No one askedrepparttar 126420 Pope. But if they had, and if it would have helpedrepparttar 126421 church: I am betting that this smiling Polish holy man, back in 1979 bounding offrepparttar 126422 plane at O’Hare, bending down to kissrepparttar 126423 ground, this flowing bundle of good will who visited more countries than any other Pope in history---I’m betting he would have hopped right on that Harley.

Bob Seger taking off intorepparttar 126424 high plains andrepparttar 126425 Pope takingrepparttar 126426 same kind of journey, but his is straight intorepparttar 126427 hearts ofrepparttar 126428 city. Straight northwest up Milwaukee Avenue, asrepparttar 126429 people start gathering andrepparttar 126430 cheers start cascading acrossrepparttar 126431 sidewalks on a warm summer afternoon. Folks streaming out ofrepparttar 126432 shops to see that beaming man onrepparttar 126433 motorcycle come to say hello.

If you’re young, if you’re poor, if you are struggling: you understand.

An actor onrepparttar 126434 world stage they’d call him when he passed. But back in Chicago in 1979 he was stillrepparttar 126435 Priest from Poland who maderepparttar 126436 Communist party functionaries tremble---not fromrepparttar 126437 politics: but from his faith. Atrepparttar 126438 beginning of his time as Pope, he came to Chicago. There could not have been a more stark contrast torepparttar 126439 imperial nature of Chicago’s John Cardinal Cody. 1979,repparttar 126440 Pope from Poland, well he just might have got on that motorcycle. Maybe have some pirogue? Maybe some kielbasa, some ham and some sausage? There would be friends who knew him in from South Bend and St. Louis, back when he was just Karol. There would always be friends. The community. To keeprepparttar 126441 church going we would eat together.

Such hopeful times. And here he was! Not just withrepparttar 126442 millions in Grant Park, but here he was onrepparttar 126443 back of that motorcycle. Right here on Milwaukee Avenue! Giving voice to so many who were different. So many who were confused:

Roll, roll me away, Won’t you roll me away tonight! I too am lost, I feel double-crossed I’m sick of what’s wrong and what’s right.

A Pope who gave shape and color torepparttar 126444 words “social justice.” Giving voice torepparttar 126445 poor, repparttar 126446 sick, repparttar 126447 folks onrepparttar 126448 outskirts---way, way far from that million dollar Cardinal’s mansion in byrepparttar 126449 Lake. A peoples Pope! And that was new.

Like Bob Seger sang:

Take away my inhibitions Take away my solitude Fire me up with your resistance Put me inrepparttar 126450 mood Stormrepparttar 126451 walls around this prison Leaverepparttar 126452 inmates Freerepparttar 126453 guards Deal me up another future From some brand new deck of cards.

Right there on Milwaukee Avenue, withrepparttar 126454 scent of fresh baked Polish rye bread sweeteningrepparttar 126455 air and giving all those inside this Christian colony of proud people a way to say: “Ok. . .maybe after a few years we are making it---maybe we are not so poor-- maybe God has given us this day our daily bread!

Seerepparttar 126456 rich man lost and lonely Watch him as he dines Sitting there just testing allrepparttar 126457 wines

Sure, even then there were “money changers” camped out inrepparttar 126458 temple. But they had yet to set up shop onrepparttar 126459 steps outside, charging corporate membership rates backed up byrepparttar 126460 rendition campaigns of American secret police, wars for oil and power, trampling of human rights, ignoringrepparttar 126461 earth that we steward and finally bowing our heads torepparttar 126462 all powerful “talking points” ofrepparttar 126463 propaganda machine that twisted a moral fundamentalism into a market fundamentalism.

Inrepparttar 126464 serenity and clarity of his faith---even when you didn’t agree with him---he could cut right throughrepparttar 126465 walls ofrepparttar 126466 machine and touch you.

The "Spring Cleaning" Angel

Written by Dot McGinnis

The "Spring Cleaning" Angel decided it was time to come to my house, repparttar other day.

For weeks, I knew that it was time for her arrival. But, I tried not to think about it.

Finally, one morning, I was able to, reluctantly, pry my mouse from my fingers (not an easy thing to do when you are online as much as I am) and replace it with a bucket, scrub rags, and wall cleaner. I really don't mind spring-cleaning. It’s justrepparttar 126417 getting started thing that’s really hard for me.

I had no problem, at all, withrepparttar 126418 walls inrepparttar 126419 room I was doing; until I came torepparttar 126420 doorway. There it was, a little brown, faded, haloed, spot aboverepparttar 126421 doorframe. As hard as I tried, with all my might, to scrub it off I could not remove it. "Hmm. Wait a minute. What is going on here?" I asked myself.

I tried everything (every kind of detergent, oil soap, all-purpose cleaner I could find) but nothing, absolutely nothing, would work. Oh, well, I'll just have to paint over it, I guess. It wasn't like it wasrepparttar 126422 whole wall or anything. It was only a little brown spot, aboverepparttar 126423 door, that stood mocking me. So, I went on, about my way, scrubbing walls until I happened to glance up atrepparttar 126424 next-door frame and there it was, again; that same curious, little, brown, faded, haloed, spot!

This was really beginning to get weird, now. What on earth was going on? Why wouldrepparttar 126425 dust fairy leave her calling card just above my doorway and nowhere else? And why, forrepparttar 126426 life of me, can’t I get it off?

Ahhh! Wait a minute. I know what that is! That’s notrepparttar 126427 dust fairy that left that there, I laughed to myself. That’s anointing oil! I looked all overrepparttar 126428 house and, sure enough, there it was (over every doorway);repparttar 126429 same silly, little, brown, spot stood guard ~ a remnant of my going, from room to room, asking God's blessing and protection on our humble abode.
