Thingvellir - Iceland's only World Heritage SiteSituated on floor of a giant geological rift in Southwest corner of Iceland is Thingvellir National Park. Taking form of a natural amphitheatre, Thingvellir is a stunningly beautiful place that sees North Atlantic Ridge carve its way northwards across island. But it is not only on strength of area's outstanding natural beauty that Thingvellir is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No, there's a lot more to Thingvellir than meets eye! The World's First Parliament In 930AD people of Iceland chose this protected location as venue for a gathering of Icelandic chieftains. The gathering resulted in establishment of world's first parliament where tribal representatives came to settle differences through diplomacy and (mostly) peaceful initiatives. Named as Althing, this open-air assembly ran for a two-week period every year. Representatives would journey from all over Iceland to put their cases forward to Althing, helping to shape laws of Iceland through ages.

The most famous of castle's ghosts is 'Blue Boy', whose agonizing cries are said to wail out at around midnight from a passageway inside castle close to one of modern-day self catering apartments. A soft light is then said to engulf a four-poster bed in room nearby and an image of boy appear for a few brief seconds. Chillingly, bones of a boy and fragments of blue clothing were discovered hidden behind a wall in very vicinity of noises several years ago.
