The Origins of Mother's DayWritten by Tony Luck
The Origins Of Mother's Day.. Today Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is celebrated all over world. For florists and card shops event is one of highlights of year, but roots of Mother’s Day are not commercial. Motherhood has been celebrated since ancient times. The ancient Greeks paid homage to Rhea, Mother of Gods; and there are records of ancient Romans worshiping a mother Goddess known as Cybele as early as 260 BC. Festivals took place in spring which was most fertile time of year. The more modern way of honouring mothers began in England in 1600s where Mothering Sunday was observed on fourth Sunday of Lent. This day is also known as ‘Refreshment Sunday’, only day when you are allowed to eat or do whatever you have given up for Lent. Not surprisingly, families came together and took opportunity to party with a big meal at which mother was treated as guest of honour. Traditionally, mothers were given posies of flowers and a cake. The term ‘Mothering Sunday’ is now falling into disuse and has mostly been replaced by ‘Mother’s Day’, which is used world over. In USA there were several attempts to introduce a Mother’s Day as a way to celebrate peace and heal scars of war. Julia Ward, who wrote words to Battle Hymn of Republic, suggested idea in 1872. But idea didn’t really take off until Anna Jarvis campaigned for establishment of a Mother’s Day to commemorate her own mother who died in 1905. Ward’s mother herself had tried to establish a similar holiday, Mother’s Friendship Day, to heal pain of Civil War.
| | A Baby Is Born With Several ReflexesWritten by Tony Luck
A Baby's Reflexes..A baby is born with certain reflexes to protect them during first few weeks. These reflexes will disappear after a few weeks and be replaced with voluntary movement during baby's development. Doctors will check these reflexes to ensure his central nervous system is working correctly. Walking Reflex If you hold baby in an upright position with his feet touching floor, his legs will seem to be trying to walk. This reflex will last for about 3-4 weeks, and he won't actually walk until he is around 12 months. Crawling Reflex Place baby on his stomach and he will take up a crawling position with his bottom in air and his legs bent. This lasts for about two months when he will then be able to lie flat. Search Reflex Touch baby's cheek with your finger or breast and he will turn towards source and open his mouth in search of food. This reflex will last for about 12 weeks.
