The Fairness of Office Politics ... Integrity and political motivation!

Written by Edward B. Toupin

I hear many complaints daily aboutrepparttar "unfairness" of politics in corporate America. Employees say that their managers "lie" or issue "personal attacks" against them. Indeed, based onrepparttar 105134 pure ideals that we are taught as a child, this might appear to berepparttar 105135 case. However, repparttar 105136 corporate culture is notrepparttar 105137 "real world" in which we live out our personal lives. Each corporate culture is its own world with its own rules and reality. To understand this, one must understandrepparttar 105138 directions and desires of this world and learn how to best adapt to achieverepparttar 105139 vision and mission ofrepparttar 105140 corporation.

--- Integrity and Politics ---

I have to say thatrepparttar 105141 words "integrity" and "politics" do not belong inrepparttar 105142 same sentence. This is in no way an insult to corporate politicians, but politics is not a reflection ofrepparttar 105143 integrity ofrepparttar 105144 individual.

The primary purpose of politics is to obtain a result. In some cases, management may not tellrepparttar 105145 whole truth and might apply "plausible deniability" to escape judgment. However, when an untruth is used, it is primarily to accomplish a task. In this way, managers may not "tell" you directly what needs to be accomplished, but instead they create a gap or an imbalance, which forcesrepparttar 105146 necessity for change and action. The end-result is a desired outcome.

Realize that, ofrepparttar 105147 many reasons for this approach, one ofrepparttar 105148 primary aims is to delegate responsibility to subordinates. If a manager has to constantly tell you what to do and how to perform, then they could very well performrepparttar 105149 task themselves. This contradictsrepparttar 105150 entire purpose of your position as well asrepparttar 105151 manager's and interferes withrepparttar 105152 desired result. However, if they create an imbalance in front of you, then you must creatively solverepparttar 105153 situation, define a path, and obtain a viable result to attain a rebalance.

--- The Thin Line ---

While I say thatrepparttar 105154 present-day ideals of integrity do not apply to corporate politics, indeed, there are some cases where individuals do abuse their political power. As such, ethics and morals do begin to apply. Not only must you, as an employee, understandrepparttar 105155 reasons and applications of politics, but those who wieldrepparttar 105156 political sword must understand how to apply their power properly without stepping overrepparttar 105157 line.

The one problem that appears in this situation is inrepparttar 105158 ability to tellrepparttar 105159 difference between "a lie" and a "political detour". Indeed, it is a difficult task if you look at it in simplistic terms. However, until a person has gained some experience with corporate cultures, my standard response is, "when you're inrepparttar 105160 corporate setting, it becomes a political detour". One must not take things personally inrepparttar 105161 corporate environment, as it is not aboutrepparttar 105162 individual; it is about results --- plain and simple.

So you want to start a home based business. Just think, you can work in your slippers when you want to - what could be better? No commute, not having to play office politics, no income - Whoops how did that sneak in?

Let's have a reality check about your home business. Can you work in your slippers? Sure, no problem. If you aren't going to be meeting face to face with your clients, it makes little difference how you're dressed.

Can you work when you want to? That really depends on a lot of things. If you are a freelance writer with little, if any contact, withrepparttar public, yes you can. However, if you are selling a product or service, andrepparttar 105133 public will be contacting you , that may not work.

The normal office is open duringrepparttar 105134 working day, but wait a minute. Typical office hours are 9-5 and if you call their number, you expect an answer. If you don't get an answer, you will most likely try another source. But withrepparttar 105135 Internet, wha are typical office hours? If you live in New York you are on eastern time, how about all your prospects onrepparttar 105136 West Coast? When you're wrapping it up forrepparttar 105137 day, they're just getting back from lunch.

So do you increase your office hours to cover all time zones. If you're onrepparttar 105138 west coast, open earlier inrepparttar 105139 morning - if you're onrepparttar 105140 east coast close later at night. Right - wrong. That will be self defeating, as far as running your own home based business. Before you worked 8 hours a day and since you decided to get out ofrepparttar 105141 "rat race", you now have to work eleven?

The first thing you should do is to postrepparttar 105142 hours when people can talk with you on your web site. But it is amazing how little attention some people pay to this. Calls will be received at all hours ofrepparttar 105143 day and night. Now, remember that anyone who does call, is a more serious prospect than one who simply responds to an email.

Should you have a toll free number? While many will argue that this is a more professional approach, it will increaserepparttar 105144 number of calls from people who are referred to as "tire kickers". If they have to spend "their dime" forrepparttar 105145 call, they will be less inclined to call unless they are serious.
