The Art of Scrapbooking

Written by Eileen Bergen

If you’d like to start scrapbooking or create scrapbook-style art, but are simply overwhelmed byrepparttar vast product choices, let me help you narrow them down and get you going. I view scrapbooking as a highly specialized form of collage.

With scrapbooking, not only are you creating artistic arrangements and layers of objects, but you are doing it around an evocative theme. Scrapbook art almost always includes: 1. photos around whichrepparttar 116067 theme is developed; and words or “journaling” which evoke, explain and expand onrepparttar 116068 theme.

The words form an integral part ofrepparttar 116069 artistic arrangement. Scrapbookers love to play with and combine fonts to give words visual expression. Just as we use tone and volume to add expression torepparttar 116070 spoken word, scrapbookers use fonts, letter placement and color to express their ideas and form a page that is pleasing torepparttar 116071 eye. Just as words can be spoken melodically or harshly, softly or loudly, repparttar 116072 words on a scrapbook page can visually shout, whisper, sing or pray.

I suppose a beginner could “go it alone” artistically, but I found it inspiring and very helpful to view other scrappers’ work in order to appreciaterepparttar 116073 range of possibilities before I began. If you’re fortunate enough to have a friend who scrapbooks, ask if you can look at her work. Also subscribe to a scrapbooking magazine. You get to see allrepparttar 116074 latest and greatest scrapbooking supplies and tools each month, along with examples of beautiful pages submitted by readers and experts.

To begin scrapbooking, it is very valuable to see how variedrepparttar 116075 art can be. No two scrappers will interpret a themerepparttar 116076 same way. This gave me a sense of artistic license when I started. There is no one right way!

Four artists, given a theme and even a page layout, will invariably provide vastly different interpretations. In fact, such contests are held periodically. The results are omething to behold.

If you still feel overwhelmed after seeingrepparttar 116077 work of experienced scrappers (or maybe due to seeing their work!), start with one of repparttar 116078 themed kits that are available at craft stores.

Forrepparttar 116079 more adventuresome beginner, it’s time to plan your page and make a shopping list!

First decide onrepparttar 116080 size for your page. The most popular size is 12 x 12”. One scrapper explained that’s because you get more “real estate” to decorate. Decide on your theme and select photos for your page. Scrappers frequently use photos fromrepparttar 116081 same shoot. This helps, not only as far as sticking withrepparttar 116082 theme goes, but also aids color coordination. Look for colors that dominate or accentrepparttar 116083 photos to decide onrepparttar 116084 colors for your background and trims.

Sewing with Polar Fleece

Written by Cyd Klein

Polar Fleeces are some ofrepparttar easiest fabrics to sew with. They are soft and warm so they work great for outdoor wear and especially winter parade or pageant wear. Here are some examples of Parade Costumes made using fleece.

First, Don't get fleeced. You put a lot of work into your sewing, make sure it lasts and buyrepparttar 116066 non-pill variety.

The non-pill finish is very important because it preventsrepparttar 116067 surface of your fabric from balling up or pilling after several washings. The less expensive fleeces without this finish are not worth sewing, because they start to look old quickly, leaving you feeling that you've wasted your money and sewing time. Pay up front, or pay later Grandma Loretta used to say.

Any fabric store should be able to tell you whether a piece of fabric has a non-pill finish. This finish is applied only torepparttar 116068 right side ofrepparttar 116069 fabric. That's important to remember because;

FLEECE HAS A RIGHT SIDE AND A WRONG SIDE.

On printsrepparttar 116070 right side is usually clearer orrepparttar 116071 colors are more vivid thanrepparttar 116072 wrong side. On solids, repparttar 116073 right side is smoother thanrepparttar 116074 wrong side which looks more like felt. If your not sure, askrepparttar 116075 fabric store personnel before you purchase it. If you have some already in your stash and are not sure which isrepparttar 116076 right side, washrepparttar 116077 fabric a couple of times. The side that looksrepparttar 116078 best isrepparttar 116079 right side.

When sewing with fleece, you have a variety of weights to choose from.

Micro fleeces are lightweight fabrics, almost like chamois. They're perfect for shirts, leggings, housecoats, lightweight jacket linings, and scarves.
