The Almighty BuckWritten by Sue and Chuck DeFiore
The almighty buck can actually be detrimental to your business. Think about it, if all you think about is how much you can make, are you really focusing on other aspects of running a business. For example quality control, safety of your product, etc. If money is your only motivating factor, what corners are you cutting to make Almighty Buck. If your focus is only on Almighty Buck are you missing other opportunities, (to make more money), because only thing you have on your mind is how much you can make. With Almighty Buck as your only motivating factor you are destined to run into problems with your business. The corners you cut, opportunities you miss, people you disappoint, are going to be your downfall. We see and hear about Almighty Buck more and more every day. We get emails that tout “Get Rich Quick”, “Make thousands working only 2 hours a weeks”, “Make Money Selling ____(put in a product name) from home”. While, yes, we all go into business to make money, that cannot be your only motivating factor. If you are blinded or sucked into these schemes I can pretty much guarantee you, you will get nothing out of it. The only person who will make any money is person selling it, and usually for only a short period of time. Then, they too, need to find next “great opportunity”. These type of offers play off of a terrible trait majority of us in this culture have, “greed”. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true it usually is. So, you ask, if I am not going into business to make money, why am I. Well, not to be evasive but only you can answer that. Also, I am NOT saying that you should not want to make money. We go into business to provide ourselves with a roof over our heads, ability to cloth ourselves, and our families, feed ourselves, and help ourselves buy things we need to keep going. So yes, money is important to us. However, it is not be all and end all. The successful business owner realizes that how he runs his business, and treats his customers is paramount to staying successful.

Your Business Profile by Bob OsgoodbySo you followed our advice and went to all work to build your own website, and now it's up and running. You put a hit counter on site, and are dismayed at number of visitors who stop by to visit. Aside from your personal hits when you check activity, there have been few if any others. You notified everyone in your address book, put up a few FFA ads, paid someone to submit your site to a few search engines, and nothing seemed to generate interest. These are things often heard from website owners that are just starting out. A few years back, I wrote an article titled "I Shot An Arrow Into The Air -It Fell To Earth I Know Not Where." Some people feel words from this poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow make an appropriate strategy for an advertising campaign for their business. They purchase hundreds of thousands of E-mail addresses, and thinking of each as an "arrow shot into air", hope that some will fall to earth and hit a prospective client. The odds of this generating business for you are "slim to none". In fact, this is called spamming, and many ISP's, who have a zero tolerance for this, may discontinue your service. So forget ads that promise that you will get millions of email addresses for a very low price, and all you have to do is sit back and watch money roll in. Many of these lists are outdated and are so old they have "whiskers". The majority of email addresses sold are actually harvested from web. Most of people who advertise, don't want to compromise their real email address so they get temporary free ones, and this is what they use in their ads. My experience is that approximately two percent of these email addresses are discontinued for one reason or another every week. Some were trial memberships with AOL that they didn't continue, while others were shut down for spamming. Some people with free email accounts lost interest - their mailboxes filled up (with other spam) and they were discontinued.
