Written by Susan Dunn, The EQ Coach

Here are some ways to dress uprepparttar “traditional” favorites at your Christmas dinner.

PIE CRUST

1. Make your usual pie crust, 2-crust version. Linerepparttar 111275 pie tin, put inrepparttar 111276 filling, and now it’s time to play. Roll outrepparttar 111277 second crust and start cutting shapes – using cooky cutters or free form with a knife. At Thanksgiving, for instance, up at my son’s house I was stuck withoutrepparttar 111278 “necessary’ equipment so I improvised, just carving out a leaf using one nearby as a model. First one doesn’t work? Pie dough is very forgiving. Roll it up and start again. Your “second chances” are infinite. You could also use something from a child’s coloring book for a pattern.

One idea – cut out 3 rounds for holly berries (use bottle cap or such if you don’t have small round cutter). Then use knife to cut out spiky holly leaves. Or use a Santa Claus cooky cutter. Place these on top ofrepparttar 111279 pie filling and bake away.

If you haverepparttar 111280 time andrepparttar 111281 inclination, whenrepparttar 111282 pie is baked and cooled, then use frosting to decorate your crust decoration. To save time, use those little tubes fromrepparttar 111283 grocery; no one cares how it tastes. Licorice for Santa’s belt, etc.

2. Using whatever you have forrepparttar 111284 top crust – shapes, lattice or solid, apply egg yolk and then sprinkle w/ colored sugar.

3. Dorepparttar 111285 usual only very different, i.e., make a pumpkin chiffon pie. At serving time, crumble candy canes and sprinkle on top.

CANDY CANES

Candy canes go so well with chocolate. You can make a chocolate dessert, like that instant pudding concoction, and then sprinkle crushed candy canes atop.

SWEET POTATOES

Make your usual sweet potato recipe and put it inrepparttar 111286 Pyrex®. Then whip up meringue nice and stiff, with lots of sugar. Circlerepparttar 111287 bowl withrepparttar 111288 meringue, and then make dollops on top with peaks. Then you can (1) sprinkle it with colored sprinkles, or (2) inrepparttar 111289 center put 3 maraschino cherries and some pineapple leaves, like holly. Or put marshmallows aroundrepparttar 111290 rim and decoration inrepparttar 111291 middle. You can shaperepparttar 111292 pineapple leaves with scissors.

BOULE DE NIEGE

Very simple, cheap, elegant looking. Buy ice cream – for Christmas it could be peppermint, coconut or pistachio. Letrepparttar 111293 ice cream soften just enough to work with, and then scoop it into a round Pyrex® that you’ve greased lightly with Pam®. Put it inrepparttar 111294 freezer until well frozen again. Then take it out, soakrepparttar 111295 dish briefly in larger bowl of warm water til you seerepparttar 111296 ice cream melting onrepparttar 111297 edges, turn it over on a pretty serving platter, and out it comes in a dome. Tear strips of waxed paper and place them all aroundrepparttar 111298 plate, underrepparttar 111299 ice cream. Now whip cream til stiff, put in pastry bag, use a tip such as Wilton 2D and pipe, pipe, pipe, little shaped blobs, each one next torepparttar 111300 other tillrepparttar 111301 mound is completely covered. Gently removerepparttar 111302 waxed paper, wiperepparttar 111303 serving platter with a wet rag, and placerepparttar 111304 ball back inrepparttar 111305 freezer till frozen. Once it’s frozen, cover it – I put a stainless steel bowl over it – and let it stay there til ready to serve.

The official "parenting" cheesecake recipe

Whoever writes all those fancy cookbooks has never been a parent. To begin with, repparttar pages are never spill-proof, almost guaranteeing that somewhere inrepparttar 111274 middle of mixing ingredients, a spill will coverrepparttar 111275 remaining two ingredients listed. This means that parents must learn to improvise.

Some would suggest thatrepparttar 111276 very thrill of cooking is experimentation. So what’srepparttar 111277 big difference between oregano and cayenne pepper, anyway?

Then there are all those "quick" recipes to "serve your family" gracingrepparttar 111278 pages of women's magazines. NO recipe is quick with Little Helper's assistance.

Forrepparttar 111279 benefit of parents everywhere, I have taken my favorite cheesecake recipe and translated it into parentease. The non-parent version is available in Cooking By The Book -- a free bonus I offer with every purchase of The Get Happy Workbook at http:/ hehappyguy.com/happiness-workbook.html .

Harvest Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake (Parent Version)

Pressrepparttar 111283 crumby oil mixture ... "Sorry, Little Helper distracted me." Pressrepparttar 111284 oily crumb mixture intorepparttar 111285 bottom of a 9-inch spring-form pan, and up aroundrepparttar 111286 edges about one inch. Put it inrepparttar 111287 refrigerator to cool – best to slip it in safely behindrepparttar 111288 broccoli and that thing that's been turning blue for three weeks in case Little Helper gets inspired

Soften three bricks of cream cheese, ideally inrepparttar 111289 microwave. If you can't separaterepparttar 111290 cheese from Little Helper's hands, let her keep doing what she's doing untilrepparttar 111291 cheese is good and soft. Creamrepparttar 111292 cheese with one and a half cups of pureed pumpkin, three large eggs, two tablespoons of cream, and one cup of brown sugar. Keep mixing until creamy.

Add one teaspoon of vanilla extract. If you are fortunate enough to have help at this stage, you have three options:
