A Passover Celebration for Christian Families

I attended my first Jewish Passover Seder about 12 years ago. My wife and I were invited torepparttar home of Jewish friends to participate with them in this special event. Our friends do not acknowledge Jesus asrepparttar 126652 Messiah, but it was clear to us what a beautiful picture of Christ’s redemptionrepparttar 126653 Passover Seder is. Since then we have celebrated a “Christian Passover Seder” which emphasizesrepparttar 126654 correlation between Israel’s deliverance from Egypt andrepparttar 126655 Believers deliverance fromrepparttar 126656 bonds of sin.

A Brief History

Passover isrepparttar 126657 oldest and most important religious festival in Judaism, commemorating God’s deliverance ofrepparttar 126658 Hebrews from slavery in Egypt and his creation ofrepparttar 126659 Israelite people. The festival of Passover begins at sunset onrepparttar 126660 14th of Nisan (usually in March or April) and marksrepparttar 126661 beginning of seven day celebration that includesrepparttar 126662 Feast of Unleavened Bread. The focal point of Passover is a communal meal, calledrepparttar 126663 Seder (which means "order," because ofrepparttar 126664 fixed order of service), which is time of rejoicing and celebration atrepparttar 126665 deliverance forrepparttar 126666 Hebrews that God accomplished inrepparttar 126667 exodus.

The actual Seder meal in most Jewish homes is an elaborate feast, with food, games forrepparttar 126671 children, and plenty of time to tellrepparttar 126672 story ofrepparttar 126673 Exodus from Egypt. It is not unusual for Seder to last three to four hours.

The Seder involves everyone present since they all share in reading and singingrepparttar 126674 story. Whilerepparttar 126675 father or grandfather is usuallyrepparttar 126676 leader ofrepparttar 126677 service, others have roles as well. The mother ofrepparttar 126678 home lightsrepparttar 126679 festival candles that signalrepparttar 126680 beginning of Passover, repparttar 126681 youngest child asksrepparttar 126682 four questions, repparttar 126683 children help eliminate all Chametz, leaven, fromrepparttar 126684 house, search forrepparttar 126685 hidden Afikomen (symbolic piece of Matzah, unleavened bread) and openrepparttar 126686 door for Elijah, repparttar 126687 parents orrepparttar 126688 grandparents tellrepparttar 126689 story ofrepparttar 126690 exodus, and various others are designated to read or lead certain portions ofrepparttar 126691 service.
