Overhearing my conversations with GodWritten by Naweko San-Joyz
Have you ever listened to yourself when you talk to God? Last week I acted as a third party while I was having a typical conversation with God. The dialogue went like, “God, I’m so fat. Help me loose some weight.” Then shockingly, listening Me said: “What hell, You sound like a total looser, you think God’s gonna help you? Get real yah baby.” There I was, looking at myself in mirror and an avalanche of questions began to reign in on me. “Does God think I’m an idiot? Do I really pass up opportunities to help myself and waste time whining to God? Does God get tired of listening to me?” After a solacing moment, Me that likes to talk with God started to think: “Maybe I do take God’s name in vain by calling this Being before I try to improve things myself. Maybe, I’m not only using God's name in vain when I give God erroneous last name "Damn".”

Whenever someone used my middle name, I knew I was in trouble if it came from my Mother or was being poked fun at by some child. Despite my embarrassment, I survived childhood teasing of my middle name. Now after 40 plus years of growing up, I recognize my parent’s wisdom in their choice of my name: good friendship and love and honor for my Grandfather. Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church also has a middle name: “Evangelical.” I often wonder why we use shorten forms our Church’s name such as “Holy Trinity” or “Holy Trinity Lutheran” and leave out “Evangelical.” Perhaps shorter versions are more convenient to use? I know that it is difficult to squeeze “Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church” onto our offering checks we write each week.
