Multiple streams of traffic Search Engines 'n' such: Part I

Not only do you want to get more traffic, you want to get more unique traffic! In order to achieve this, you need to create multiple streams of traffic for your site. Settling for one source of traffic is simply not enough for most small to mid-size sites, or home-based business sites. This is first of four parts in a mini-series about generating multiple streams of traffic for your website. The remainder will be published here on newbie-guides over next few days.

Considering competition most people experience with Search engines, not to mention ever increasing trend towards 'pay for inclusion' with major search engines, it can be a real challenge to get decent traffic from SE's alone (not impossible, just challenging). Likewise, most net advertising and promotion has become much less effective, in particular banner style advertisements are now not really much more use than creating brand awareness, and unless you get massive coverage with your banners, you won't create much awareness.

This does not mean that you should skip these forms of traffic. That would be foolish. However, what it does mean is that you need to look for other, alternative, sources of traffic that can fill in gaps, and provide additional traffic to your site. Two very good additional ways of increasing your traffic are 1) to make use of a variety of 'viral' marketing techniques, and 2) to promote your online presence in offline media (print, radio, TV, etc.).

1) Search Engines

Search engines are still a fantastic source of traffic - probably most important - because they will simply keep on producing traffic forever once your site has been indexed. The problem is getting a good placement (first page) on good keywords (ones that are relevant to your site and get lots of searches). This is not always easy, especially if you are in a competitive field. Even if you have a poor search engine placement, you will still get some traffic, however, a poor placement will result in very poor traffic flow.

I won't go into details of meta tags and search engine optimization here - there are literally dozens of sites that try to teach you how to do that. Check a few of them out. A word of warning however, be very careful with what you choose to believe when you read those sites. Unless they can prove they have produced many top 10 search engine placements on many different keywords, generally what they are telling/selling is rubbish. Remember what you are looking for is HIGHLY TARGETED traffic coming to your site because your site gives them what they need and want.

Viral Traffic Techniques - Multiple streams of Traffic: PART III

Viral traffic is simplest way to get increased traffic flow to your site and your affiliate programs. Once you get it kick-started, amount of traffic that viral marketing methods can produce is quite staggering. Two of more common (and more successful) methods are give-aways and affiliate programs.

Give-aways are an incredibly effective way to drive traffic to your sites. The most common form of give-away are ebooks. Essentially what you do is create an ebook with links back to your site (or affiliate programs), and give it away to people. The goal is for them to in turn give it away to others and so on.

I'm sure you can see that what we are talking about is age old pyramid. Give it away to 3 who in turn give it to 3 who give it to 3 more and suddenly you have a HUGE impact. Of course there are pitfalls to any pyramid scheme - in this case, main problem is making people give it away.

There is no way to 'make' someone give your freebie away, however, you can do some things to make it more likely. The most important thing to do is be sure that your give-aways are useful and have actual value. If you give away a product that is nothing more than a bunch of links to your affiliate programs, nobody else will give it away - there is no value in it. However if you create a useful product that gives reader some real benefit, they will be inclined to give it away themselves.

There are two ways to ensure value and benefit in your give-aways. 1) use real, useful content or a product that provides useful and unique value. 2) make it brandable - in essence, let people put their own information in book/product when they continue to give it away. Many ebook compilers come with a little bit of software that lets users 'brand' product with their own information. If you are thinking that this defeats purpose of giving away products, it doesn't. It simply means that you must be more subtle in your approach.

For example, you make sure splash page of your ebook/giveaway clearly identifies your homepage as source of book. You can make only 1/2 (or 3/4) of links brandable within book, include a footer on every page, an opt-in sign-up form on 'last page' of book for your email list etc. Above all, make it valuable.

If you still think it isn't possible, just take a look at what Jimmy D. Brown has done. He is widely known as one of most successful money makers on net. In a recent interview Jimmy, he revealed that he has NOT ADVERTISED ONCE in over 2 years. He gets all his traffic by giving away brandable ebooks.

Affiliate programs

Another phenomenal method of generating viral traffic and sales is through affiliate programs. In this case, your own affiliate program for your own products. Again, quality and value are key. If you have a cruddy product with a 1% payout, nobody will be interested. Create a reasonable product that offers good value and reasonably unique content (information or service), and you will have a winner.
