Mount Chimborazo: Climbing Glaciers Near The Equator

Written by Steve Gillman

The climb uprepparttar glaciers torepparttar 133871 summit of Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador isn't considered highly technical. Technically, it is mountaineering, but how hard could it be, considering that I went to 20,600 feetrepparttar 133872 first time I used crampons and an ice axe? Okay, I had used them once for practice, on a sledding hill near my house. I climbed almost forty feet while people walked by with their sleds, warning their kids to stay away from me.

Driving Up Mount Chimborazo

It is easier to climb a mountain whenrepparttar 133873 guide drives you to 15,000 feet. Don't get me wrong. Climbing that last 5,600 feet was one ofrepparttar 133874 most difficult things I've done, but not forrepparttar 133875 skill required. The fact thatrepparttar 133876 air was missing half of its oxygen is what had me quitting twenty or thirty times onrepparttar 133877 way up Chimborazo. It just gets difficult to move up there.

The Graveyard

The little monuments nearrepparttar 133878 first refuge weren't for climbers without skill. The graveyard is a testament torepparttar 133879 unpredictability of all high places. Chimborazo is very high, it randomly drops large rocks on you, and has weather that changes byrepparttar 133880 minute. Even as we were hiking torepparttar 133881 second refuge, we could hearrepparttar 133882 rocks and pieces of ice falling somewhere above.

El Refugio Edward Whymper is a simple, unheated hut at 16,000 feet, named afterrepparttar 133883 English climber who first made it torepparttar 133884 summit ofrepparttar 133885 mountain. Okay, it isn't entirely unheated. There is a fireplace, and when somebody feels like carrying wood up to 5000 meters, repparttar 133886 fire might raiserepparttar 133887 temperature inrepparttar 133888 hut by 3 degrees.

We had "mate de coca" a tea made of coca leaves, which are also known for another product made from them--one that is taken uprepparttar 133889 nose. Then we went hiking for a short while. That was my acclimatization. We ate, and I slept for at least an hour before startingrepparttar 133890 ascent at eleven that night.

A Little About Mount Chimborazo

Chimborazo is in Ecuador, not far fromrepparttar 133891 Equator (100 miles south). The elevation inrepparttar 133892 center ofrepparttar 133893 country, andrepparttar 133894 moderating effect ofrepparttar 133895 Humboldt Current, which runs alongrepparttar 133896 west side of South America, givesrepparttar 133897 country near perfect weather. A bit hot alongrepparttar 133898 coast and lowlands, but spring--like in Quito (the capital) , with daily highs inrepparttar 133899 sixties to low seventies year--round. Wonderful weather almost everywhere--until you get high enough.

Chimborazo, at it's peak, isrepparttar 133900 furthest point fromrepparttar 133901 center ofrepparttar 133902 Earth. Our planet bulges atrepparttar 133903 equator, making Mount Chimborazo even futher out there than Everest. It hasrepparttar 133904 distinction of beingrepparttar 133905 closest point torepparttar 133906 sun onrepparttar 133907 planet, and yet stillrepparttar 133908 coldest place in Ecuador.

Climbing Chimborazo

Paco, my guide, didn't likerepparttar 133909 lightweight part of this mountain climbing adventure. He frowned when he saw my sleeping bag, which packed up smaller than a football, and weighed a pound. My frameless backpack didn't seem to impress him either (13 ounces). In any case, although it did get below freezing inrepparttar 133910 hut, just as he said it would, I stayed warm--as I said I would. No problems so far.

Unfortunately, Paco didn't speak a word of English, and I was just learning Spanish. Since our whole group consisted of him and me, we did have some communication problems. I thought, for example, thatrepparttar 133911 $11 fee forrepparttar 133912 "night" (a few hours) inrepparttar 133913 hut was included inrepparttar 133914 $130 guide fee. He thought that I was a mountain climber.

AC Power Adapters - Do I Really Need Them?

Written by Tara Pearce

By now you have decided where you want to go and if you have read my ac adapter article you know whether or not you need to bring along some ac power adapters. Unfortunately, like many things in life, there are no exact rules governing travel adapters.

I recommend bringing power adapters even if you know your destination usesrepparttar same kind of ac plug. Many tropical vacation destinations only have power outlets without a ground. Therefore if you have a grounded plug (like on your laptop) you will need an ac power adapter to convert it for a non-grounded outlet. North Americans please remember that many of your appliances with non-grounded plugs are polarized. (ie. They can only fit in one way). You may need an ac wall adapter in many countries as their outlets will not accept polarized plugs.

If you are traveling to Great Britain you should be extra careful about which ac adapters you bring. Britain doesn’t have a standardized system for ac adaptors and actually have several different kinds of wall outlets, so you may need to purchase a travel adapter once you reach your hotel. If you do, you can find foreign plug adapters atrepparttar 133870 local hardware store.
