Lycopene Effective with Prostate Cancer Treatment

Written by Darin Ingels

Men with prostate cancer who take supplemental lycopene in addition to surgical removal ofrepparttar testicles may experience less active disease, less bone pain, and live longer than those who only have surgical removal ofrepparttar 113771 testicles, according to a new study in British Journal of Urology International (2003;92:375-8). This is exciting news for millions of men who have to undergo aggressive treatment for advanced prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer isrepparttar 113772 most common cancer found in men overrepparttar 113773 age of 50 years, with more than 200,000 new cases each year inrepparttar 113774 United States. The cause of prostate cancer, like many other cancers, is unknown; however, some studies suggest alterations in testosterone metabolism may play a role in its development. Prostate cancer is generally slow growing and may not cause any symptoms until late inrepparttar 113775 disease. Symptoms may include frequent or painful urination, dribbling after urination, sensation of incomplete emptying ofrepparttar 113776 bladder, or blood inrepparttar 113777 urine. The symptoms of prostate cancer are similar to those of a non-cancerous condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), so men experiencing these symptoms should consult their physician for an accurate diagnosis.

Inrepparttar 113778 new study, 54 men with advanced prostate cancer were randomly assigned to have surgical removal ofrepparttar 113779 testicles (orchidectomy) alone or orchidectomy plus oral supplementation with 4 mg of lycopene a day. Measurements of PSA (a blood marker of prostate cancer activity), bone scans, and urinary flow were taken initially and every three months for two years. Men receiving lycopene started onrepparttar 113780 day of their surgery.

After six months, PSA had significantly decreased in both groups, indicating a reduction in prostate cancer activity. However, PSA levels in those receiving lycopene were more than 65% lower than in those who did not receive lycopene. After two years, PSA levels inrepparttar 113781 lycopene treatment group had fallen intorepparttar 113782 normal range, while those who only underwent surgery still had PSA levels more than twicerepparttar 113783 upper limit of normal. Urinary symptoms significantly improved in both groups, but better improvement was again observed inrepparttar 113784 lycopene group. The lycopene group also experienced less bone pain.

Pure Water--A Great Alternative to Bottled Water

Written by George Shears

Is Bottled Waterrepparttar Answer?

Nothing is more important to our health than drinking lots of pure water. All ofrepparttar 113770 complex biochemical functions in our bodies depend on this key substance. Along with regulatingrepparttar 113771 many micro-processes in our cells, it's essential in absorbing and transporting all nutrients and oxygen throughoutrepparttar 113772 body. It's equally critical in eliminating wastes and toxins fromrepparttar 113773 body. At a time when we are exposed to increasing levels of environmental toxins from our food, air, and water, repparttar 113774 conventional wisdom to "drink 6 to 8 glasses of clean water per day for optimum health" is more important than ever before.

Unfortunately, as most people now know, most sources of drinking water are also contaminated with a wide variety of toxins. As a result, increasing numbers of people are now using water filters and are spending large sums of money annually on bottled water.

It is not so widely known, however, that an FDA survey has stated that 31% ofrepparttar 113775 52 brands of bottled water tested were tainted with bacteria. Similarly, a study conducted byrepparttar 113776 National Resources Defense Council on 103 brands of bottled water found that about one-third of them contained levels of contamination--including synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic. Moreover, there is growing evidence that xenoestrogens can leach out ofrepparttar 113777 plastic bottles intorepparttar 113778 water when they are stored for long periods in either hot or very cold environments.

So many Americans, in spite of spending over $1,000 a year on bottled water, may still be exposing themselves to a significant level of toxins. These two facts taken together provide a major incentive for considering a new alternative to bottled water. It's called "WELLNESS WATER."

A Brief History of Wellness Water

Around 30 years ago, Haru Naito left Japan to attendrepparttar 113779 State University of New York. After winningrepparttar 113780 NCAA swimming championship there, he returned to Japan to coach Japan's National Swimming Team. Through his devotion to improvingrepparttar 113781 performance of his swimmers, he became involved inrepparttar 113782 emerging field of sports medicine. This led him to start investigatingrepparttar 113783 unusual levels of health, vitality, and longevity of certain ethnic groups, includingrepparttar 113784 Hunza of Pakistan.

As a result of his extensive research with this group, he concluded that their extraordinary health and longevity was largely due to their water supply. Through careful analysis of this water, he discovered that it had certain unique features as a result of being filtered through minerals of volcanic origin.

Duringrepparttar 113785 following years, he continued to investigaterepparttar 113786 effects of filtering water through similar volcanic minerals in Japan until he developed water with properties very similar to those he had discovered withrepparttar 113787 Hunza. The final result of his ongoing research wasrepparttar 113788 development ofrepparttar 113789 "Wellness Filter."
