“Keep It Simple Stupid”Written by Florie Lyn Masarate
Recognize that saying? It has been used in many different things to mean simplicity is key to doing things best. In explaining concepts, putting it in simple yet understandable terms would easily get your message through. This is in contrast to using confusing words and “beating around bushes”, resulting to an overload of information yet losing main idea in process. This same saying should also be applied in designs of websites. Ever felt frustration of having to go through much information while browsing in some sites? Not only that, think of all graphics that keep appearing and popping every now and then. Most of time, these things make downloading pretty slow. And you only went there for simple information. Take researching, for example. These sites were meant to help in every way possible. Making hassle of researching more convenient and easy. But some people do not have patience of waiting for an animation to stop moving, or for flow of not needed information, and impossible icons to find on screen. Not all users have same modems and software you have. So if it is not hard for some, it may be terrible for others. Think of people in a rush to purchase something. Dazzling them with intricate graphics would likely send their tempers rocketing. And special effects can only make them want to scream with frustration. And for what? For a request of a catalog?

There was once a time when banners were most important forms of printing for information, educational, and advertising purposes. People see them everywhere during that time, big and small. Anywhere one looks, banners are displayed, showcasing different businesses and companies. Banners were put into websites in internet age. These times, with graphic designs and colors that added a certain style into these things. That was before. What people do not know about is that banner advertising is considered a dead business in internet nowadays. This is according to marketing experts of internet. This is based from fact that banners are expensive. According to studies, number of people visiting and clicking through them are less and that success rate is minimal. Chances are, people using banners would end up losing more money than cost they have paid for them. The same people who were investing their money on banner business before were first ones pulling out of this kind of advertising and turning to other sources. What had caused death of banner advertising? Many banners are put in with so many graphics designs in them that people could not anymore understand what banner is about. While incorporating more colors and graphics design made banner look attractive enough, essence of what is about gets lost in all these mixtures. Although advertisers’ purpose of getting attention made its mark, content is lost in purpose. People get to admire them but after that, they tend to forget what they were admiring about. Designs, yes, but what else?
