Is The Theme Running Throughout The Story?

Written by Nick Vernon

Creative Writing Tips –

It’s no use coming up with a theme and not using it. Short stories are about a character or characters and about one situation or happening in those characters’ lives.

By concentrating on that one thing, our stories are focused. You will need to focus to maintain a level of intensity and sticking torepparttar theme enables us to do that.

Let me give you an example…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scenario One
Let’s say your story is about a young man (main character) who is being harassed (one situation) byrepparttar 128846 school bully (secondary character.) Let’s placerepparttar 128847 setting in grade school.
Now if we focus on that single happening and in our story say….
•What startedrepparttar 128848 bullying
•Whatrepparttar 128849 main character felt, confronted with this problem
•Whatrepparttar 128850 main character did to overcome this problem
•Ifrepparttar 128851 main character won or lost againstrepparttar 128852 bully…
Then we’ll be focusing only on that incident which is what our story is about.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Scenario Two

Now if we took that situation further and in our story said that this character grew up and was bullied in high school and then later by a colleague…

That will be listing three incidences, which will weaken our story because we are not focusing.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Remember a short story is short.
We don’t have too much leeway to develop too many things so we have to be selective with what we choose to concentrate on. Short stories work best when they span over a short period of time.
The Internet and Tom Robbins are both windows into new realities
Written by Jesse S. Somer
These days I go on torepparttar Internet not having any clue as to what is going to grab my interest on that particular day. What is slowly seeping into my subconscious like sludge intorepparttar 128844 sewer isrepparttar 128845 idea that I’m probably going to learn something new of interest to my already strange and twisted human existence. Whetherrepparttar 128846 information turns out to be credible is another issue altogether seeing that my fellow human weirdoes are prone torepparttar 128847 occasional exaggeration and ‘white lie’. Nonetheless, every time I go for a so-called ‘surf’ intorepparttar 128848 deep blue waves of social consciousness I seem to find myself sitting on some new island of information that inevitably causes a smile to crack across my crystallized serious Internet writer’s façade that I must present to my colleagues so that they don’t uncover my secret true identity, that being that I’m a Sweet Medicine Clown fromrepparttar 128849 planet Zepton. That last sentence’s structure is dedicated torepparttar 128850 mastery of Tom Robbins.
Today’s particular Internet search was triggered by memories of laughter caused byrepparttar 128851 reading of books by a fellow named Tom Robbins. Although this guy has written eight awesome novels, most people I ask have never heard of him. After searching for sites dedicated to him I did discover that a lot of other people have read his stuff and actually feel very strongly about it. The main site I found was calledrepparttar 128852 AFTRLife at http://www.rain.org/~da5e/tom_robbins.html. The real buzz I experienced wasrepparttar 128853 biographical information I learnt about Robbins’ personal history, I mean it’s one thing to really be affected by someone’s fictional writing, but another dimension altogether to read about what they supposedly got up to in their life.
