IT'S TIME TO RETIRE THE 'CHRIST-KILLER' CHARGEWritten by Rolf Gompertz
Christ-killers!That charge has been leveled against Jews for two- thousand years. It has led to horrible, brutal persecutions, culminating in Nazi Holocaust and death of Six Million Jews. The Holocaust brought about deep theological soul- searching within Christianity. It led to a revised view of circumstances involving Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus, a more appreciative understanding of Jewish faith, and a more respectful approach to Jewish-Christian relations. Now comes Mel Gibson's highly controversial film, "The Passion of Christ," (premiere date: Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004). According to concerned Jewish and Christian leaders, film resurrects Christ-killer charge with a passion. It is time to retire Christ-killer charge, once and for all. The Jews did not kill Jesus. The Romans killed Jesus. The most obvious evidence is form of execution - crucifixion - ordered by Pontius Pilate, Roman procurator of Judea. Crucifixion was not a Jewish form of capital punishment. The New Testament suggests that Pontius Pilate was willing to release Jesus, but that Jews wanted him dead. It was other way around. Pilate saw Jesus as a dangerous messianic revolutionary, who had to be destroyed. Pilate was a schemer and manipulator. He had full control over Jewish High Priest, who held office at Pontius Pilate's discretion. He, Pilate, had final control - since he kept High Priest's officiating robes under lock and key in Tower of Antonia. The High Priest needed these robes to officiate at major holidays, like Passover. If he did not do Pilate's bidding, robes were not released to him, and he was replaced by a more malleable High Priest (Source: "Man's Religions," by John B. Ross [p. 574].) Pilate was not confused, conflicted, considerate, stymied person pictured in New Testament. He was a harsh, brutal and cruel ruler. There was great unrest at time in Holy Land. People were being oppressed by Rome and craved liberation from Roman rule. They yearned for promised, triumphant Messiah. The biblical accounts suggest that Jesus was put on trial by Sanhedrin, Jewish religious court, yet religious Sanhedrin did not meet and would not have met at night.

From first moment I heard about this movie several months ago, I knew it was going to be something different. I wasn’t wrong. It hasn’t only been different it has been a phenomenon – well BEFORE it was even released. One is inclined to wonder why, whenever name of Jesus Christ is mentioned, name has power to generate such controversy. Over 2000 years later, name of Jesus still stirs up people, especially when focus is release of a major motion picture depicting last 12 hours of His life. I know why. Those last 12 hours are reason He came to this earth in first place. He came to redeem us back to God Father by willingly laying down His life for us. By taking punishment we deserve for our sin and thereby granting us a pardon from God Father. Yes, I said He laid down His own life. Not one human being on this earth had power to take life of Jesus. He gave us His life so that we might have eternal life in Him. You say, but movie depicts Him being brought up on false charges by Pharisees, and wrongly and savagely beaten and scourged by Roman soldiers. As if that wasn’t enough to kill someone, he was then forced to carry a cross weighing 300 pounds up a hill. Granted he had help from Simon of Cyrene, but could you have even been able to lift YOURSELF up after enduring such torture and carry a 300 pound cross as far as he did ALONE? All while being continually pushed, hit, spat upon, and whipped by soldiers and for what? For us, humankind. Yes, humans did that to Him. However, they could not have, had power not been given to them from God Father AND Jesus’ obedience to Father and willingness to do so. Some have said this movie is anti-Semitic and they said that BEFORE even seeing it. In fact that was said BEFORE movie was even released. Some have said it depicted Roman soldiers as ruthless and brutal. Guess what? The soldiers WERE ruthless and brutal. The whole human race is and can be ruthless and brutal. Anti-Semitic? No, it is not. How can I say that? Because, first of all Jesus was a Jew. So was His mother. So were apostles and most of His followers. The first Christians were Jews. Some have said that Christians, and I am one, are promoting anti-Semitism by supporting and promoting this movie. You see, that is just not possible because those who ARE truly Christian, cannot be anti anyone. It would be a complete oxymoron to say I am a Christian and then be a racist. Anyone who is truly a Christian and abides in Jesus Christ will not and cannot be against any race. Like Bill Gallatin, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Fingerlakes, NY said, there aren’t any races other than human race, just different nationalities. No, neither Jews, nor Romans put Jesus on cross. Our sin was reason He willingly laid down His life for us ALL. Why? Because He loves us, that’s why and He wants us with Him for eternity. He became perfect, sacrificial Lamb who laid down His life for our transgressions.
