How to Use Technology to Better Prepare Students for the Workforce

Written by Tina O'Block

Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in our everyday lives as well asrepparttar workforce. Recent studies predict that byrepparttar 109172 year 2010 almost every job inrepparttar 109173 American workplace will require some use of technology. This influx in technology has caused changes inrepparttar 109174 wayrepparttar 109175 computer is being used inrepparttar 109176 workplace and inrepparttar 109177 way computer literacy needs to be taught in our schools.

Whenrepparttar 109178 personal computer was first introduced inrepparttar 109179 1980’s, people had to learn how to operate it, program it, and utilize its basic functions. Today, people and businesses are becoming more familiar with technology and using it more as a tool for such things as information gathering, data analysis and interpretation, presenting information, problem solving, communication, etc. This technology is also continually being updated and changed to allow for more efficient and productive work, causing people to have to keep pace with this new information. In such a knowledge-based economy, knowing how to locate information quickly, evaluate this information for bias and accuracy, and synthesize and apply that information to solve problems will be needed and valued skills. Therefore, teaching students skills such as these will better prepare them forrepparttar 109180 workforce ofrepparttar 109181 21st century.

Simply providing students with technology in isolated computer classes will not teach students these necessary skills or how to userepparttar 109182 computer as a tool. After all, repparttar 109183 end result is not wanting students to simply know how to operate computers but how to use them as a tool for organization, communication, problem-solving, and research.

Technology needs to be integrated intorepparttar 109184 curriculum using an active/inquiry-based method of learning. In this method, instead of students being shown specific steps to follow to solve a problem and then solving problems from a textbook, they are given a “real world” problem to solve and must create their own strategies for data gathering, analyzing, hypothesizing and testing solutions. By constructing their own strategies, they gain a deeper understanding of problem-solving skills. By solving real world problems, students are better able to relate their learning to their own lives and similar future situations. Oftentimesrepparttar 109185 students work in groups to solve their problems which enhances students’ interpersonal skills and teamwork. They also learn to accept different perspectives, work cooperatively, and state their opinions and feelings. After all, few jobs require people to work in total isolation; therefore, being able to work with others is an important aspect of society andrepparttar 109186 workplace.

How to Be a Better Student and Improve Your Learning

Written by Royane Real

If you’re a student attending classes, you have probably experienced many moments when it was hard to make yourself settle down and study, even when an important exam was coming up.

If you’re like most students, you put off studying untilrepparttar very last minute. The night beforerepparttar 109171 exam, you’ll stay up all night cramming, getting little or no sleep. Inrepparttar 109172 morning, you’ll drag yourself out of bed, psych yourself up with lots of coffee and some cigarettes, and go intorepparttar 109173 exam feeling exhausted, drained and jittery all atrepparttar 109174 same time. You’ll find it hard to focus or think, and you’ll be cursing yourself for not starting to study sooner.

And not surprisingly, unless you’re blessed with natural brilliance, or you happen to knowrepparttar 109175 subject matter extremely well, you’ll probably do terribly onrepparttar 109176 test.

If this is your typical method of studying, you already know it doesn’t work. Every time you go through this ritual, you tell yourself that you’re going to smarten uprepparttar 109177 next time you face a big exam. Next time you’ll start to study weeks in advance, you say. But instead, you keep repeating this crazy pattern. Why does this keep happening? And what should you be doing instead if you want to get better marks?

A big problem for most people, especially those who are young students, is that life gets inrepparttar 109178 way. If you’re a student, you probably have a part time job, and like most young people, you also want to have a social life.

Studying can seem very boring compared to allrepparttar 109179 exciting temptations just outside your door. Orrepparttar 109180 games on your computer. Even watching old reruns of Sesame Street can seem more interesting thanrepparttar 109181 biology text your teacher is expecting you to master!

One reason we often don’t start studying untilrepparttar 109182 last possible minute is that we have misjudged how long it will actually take us to absorb and understandrepparttar 109183 material. If your mid-term is still six weeks away, that might seem like plenty of time left before you need to get around to studying. You might find however, thatrepparttar 109184 subject matter is a lot harder to understand than you thought it would be, and all of a sudden there’s no time left to ask someone to explain it to you.

Another reason we often put off starting to study is that we are too overwhelmed with how bigrepparttar 109185 project actually seems to be. Somehow we convince ourselves that putting off a tough study project can berepparttar 109186 best way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by it.

When we are faced with a study project that seems exceptionally difficult and overwhelming, it can be to maintain a high level of interest and motivation forrepparttar 109187 duration ofrepparttar 109188 learning process.

If you have been guilty of all these bad study habits, it’s not too late to learn some other habits that will work better for you.

First, remind yourself why you want to do better in your studies. Maybe you need a good mark to get into a good college. Maybe you want a chance at a career that will pay you well. Always keep your end goal in mind.

You can put little cards up around your room with inspirational messages, and attractive photographs that will remind you why you want to do well in school.

If you feel very overwhelmed, you can improve your motivation and your performance by breaking uprepparttar 109189 project into smaller sections, or “chunks”. Each time you accomplish one little bit successfully, give yourself a meaningful reward.
