How to Make Christmas Bread

My mother wasrepparttar daughter of Norwegian immigrants who homesteaded our small Wisconsin dairy farm inrepparttar 111349 late 1800s. Christmas bread was one ofrepparttar 111350 goodies she baked in December.

Christmas Bread This recipe makes two loaves. • 2 cups warm water • 2 packages of dry yeast • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 eggs • 1/2 cup shortening (I have also used Canola oil) • 1 to 2 cups of citron (if you really likerepparttar 111351 taste of citron, add 2 cups) • 6 to 7 cups of flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 2 cups of flour, sugar, eggs, salt, shortening/oil and beat until smooth. Add citron. Add 4 cups of flour. Mix. Knead for 10 minutes. If dough becomes too sticky, knead in an-other 1/2 to 1 cup of flour.

Julekake This recipe makes two large round loaves. • 2 cups milk • 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup butter (or margarine) • 2 packages of yeast • 1/2 cup warm water • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon cardamom (substitute cinnamon or nutmeg if you prefer) • 7 cups flour • 1 cup of raisins • 1/2 cup of citron • 1/2 cup of red candied cherries • 1/2 cup of green candied cherries

In a medium saucepan, heatrepparttar 111351 butter, milk, sugar and salt untilrepparttar 111352 margarine/butter has melted. Pourrepparttar 111353 milk mixture into a large bowl and let it cool.

Dissolverepparttar 111354 yeast inrepparttar 111355 warm water and add it torepparttar 111356 milk mixture. Addrepparttar 111357 cardamom (or other spice) and 3 cups of flour and beat until smooth. Mix inrepparttar 111358 fruit and 4 cups of flour. Kneadrepparttar 111359 dough for about 10 minutes. Ifrepparttar 111360 dough becomes too sticky, knead in another 1/4 to 1/2 cup of flour.
