Hinged Rail Stair LiftsWritten by Christian Dunnage
If a door at top or bottom of stairs may be blocked by rail of stairlift, there are a number of models designed to overcome this problem. Some manufacturers are able to produce a rail with reduced overhang upstairs, so lift will not protrude as far into hallway. This may solve problem at top of your stairs and is a very cost effective solution. If there is a door or passageway at bottom of stairs then it is likely that you will need a folding track or hinged rail stairlift. This means that bottom section of rail can be folded out of way when lift is not being used. This will allow you to gain access to a door that would be blocked by a normal rail and also means that there is no tripping hazard if you have an open hallway downstairs. The hinged rail option is available from most suppliers but cost and quality can vary greatly. Seek independent advice and consider if you would be able to fold rail manually or if you would require powered operation. Most people do need powered version as mechanism can be quite heavy. Unfortunately these options will add to cost of lift.

My friend Linda sent me following “Heads up” regarding CODEX and its status in Canada. How it fares in US remains to be seen but there is hope in that when then President Bill Clinton tried to bring it in in early 90’s it was defeated by Gray Panthers – retirees – who showed Billy C “where power really was”! But, for now and in Canada, “We have won”! There will be no $60 price tags on 30-pill bottles of vitamin C at a max 500 iu’s each – at least not in near future. Nor for other “health food related vitamin and mineral products”. Here’s what I received over Internet this morning from Linda:
