God Made the Stars, AlsoWritten by Joyce C. Lock
And God made two great lights; greater light to rule day, and lesser light to rule night: he made stars also. After these things word of Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as stars of heaven, and as sand which is upon sea shore; and thy seed shall possess gate of his enemies; And I will make thy seed to multiply as stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all nations of earth be blessed. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as stars of heaven for multitude. Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now Lord thy God hath made thee as stars of heaven for multitude. Their children also multipliedst thou as stars of heaven, and broughtest them into land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. Is not God in height of heaven? and behold height of stars, how high they are! When I consider thy heavens, work of thy fingers, moon and stars, which thou hast ordained ... O give thanks unto Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that by wisdom made heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that stretched out earth above waters: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.
| | A Sun and a ShieldWritten by Joyce C. Lock
The day is thine, night also is thine: thou hast prepared light and sun. For Lord God is a sun and shield: Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as sun before me. The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. From rising of sun unto going down of same Lord's name is to be praised. The heavens declare glory of God; and firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all earth, and their words to end of world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from end of heaven, and his circuit unto ends of it: and there is nothing hid from heat thereof. The law of Lord is perfect, converting soul: testimony of Lord is sure, making wise simple. The statutes of Lord are right, rejoicing heart: commandment of Lord is pure, enlightening eyes. The fear of Lord is clean, enduring for ever: judgments of Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. They shall fear thee as long as sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good of all his labour that he taketh under sun all days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see sun. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour days of his life, which God giveth him under sun. Who is she that looketh forth as morning, fair as moon, clear as sun, and terrible as an army with banners? I went down into garden of nuts to see fruits of valley, and to see whether vine flourished, and pomegranates budded. Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like chariots of Amminadib. Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in Shulamite? As it were company of two armies.
