Fuel Index ( A measuring stick for a company's success)Written by Ramakrishna Pochiraju
Every company has a Vision, a Mission and a set of core values. Companies develop multiple strategies that implemente Values to realize their Mission.I always wondered, 1) Is there any relationship between a company's values and it's success? 2) Do a company's Values impact other factors of success? 3) How do we measure that impact? Every company should have Values that increase and support higher Productivity (P), Quality (Q) of product, quality of workplace and quality of working. Every company’s Values should also encourage and reward Creativity ( C ). The Values of every company should serve as a primary fuel to fan growth of ‘company-employee’ social system. For Values to produce higher Productivity and instill Creativity while upholding highest possible and attainable Quality in process, Values need to thrive in air of honesty. Honesty in a company is synonym for courage and is a measure of risk readiness and agility. I define Fuel Index as one that measures sustainability and agility of a company. Higher Fuel Index better a company’s chances for a successful and sustainable leap from good to great. I suggest to list company’s Values and rank each Value from ‘0’ to ‘2’ in regards to how Value impacts “Productivity”, “Quality” and “ Creativity” (‘0’ means Value has no impact on ). Also rank values from ‘0’ to ‘2’ with respect to risk involved to implement Value to achieve higher Productivity, Quality and Creativity (‘0’ being no risk involved in implementing that Value to achieve goals).
| | The Art of Being Specific Encourages Focus Written by Lawrence Roth
Being specific has often been difficult for me. I like to dream big and incorporate everything all at once. That is why going from a hobby to a career with Rothline Entertainment (http://www.rothline.com) was more difficult than it needed to be. Rothline Entertainment debuted in August 2003 specifically focused on marketing computer and video games and PC software. However, it took me a while to focus on specifics. Fortunately, I had help and advice of my parents, siblings, and spouse. I wanted Rothline Entertainment to start out big; offering video games, movies on DVD, card and board games, and anything remotely related to entertainment. My ideas were overwhelming and deciding where to start was difficult. Like any new business with a limited budget I needed to start small, be specific, and be focused. I had to start brainstorming and writing down ideas. I had to focus on what I can do now not what I want to do later. Before I wrote everything down and began to be more specific, I felt stressed and nervous about starting Rothline e-commerce site. Once I was able to get specifics written down I began to feel more relaxed. I know it has been said many times before but it does not hurt to say it again; “the art of being specific encourages focus.” This means that once you can specifically write down you goals in manageable steps you can then be focused on following through on those goals.
