Elections Teaching Tip

An election brings many opportunities to relate curriculum to real life. Whether it is a local or national election, here are some ideas to try before and after Election Day.

1. Discuss howrepparttar commercials for each candidate have been written to persuade. Analyzerepparttar 109258 graphics, text, and tone ofrepparttar 109259 voiceover. Try rewriting a commercial so that it does NOT persuade.

2. Discuss how television affectsrepparttar 109260 debates. Try having two students debate a question with an audience and then listen to two other students debate an issue on an audio tape. Was there a discernible difference? Which was more effective?

3. Discuss campaigning. What do you thinkrepparttar 109261 candidates are learning about our country and its citizens? What do you think isrepparttar 109262 effect on their families? Try having an election in your own class, starting with a caucus, and go throughrepparttar 109263 entire process.

4. Practice main idea, supporting details, and outlining by researching one issue for both candidates. Make a Venn diagram to see if there are any similarities in views.

Thanksgiving Holiday History

America celebrates Thanksgiving every year by festive family gatherings, traditional holiday meals and offering thanks for all good fortunes.  The Thanksgiving holiday has a history that dates back to early American settlers.  These settlers were known asrepparttar Pilgrims and they wererepparttar 109257 first to have a Thanksgiving Day party.  

The Pilgrims came to America to escape religious persecution in England.  They were granted free passage onrepparttar 109258 Mayflower on September 6th, 1620 as long as they would work in exchange forrepparttar 109259 next seven years.  Unfortunately,repparttar 109260 winter was so harsh that over half ofrepparttar 109261 pilgrims didn't make it torepparttar 109262 spring.  Less than fifty Pilgrims survivedrepparttar 109263 brutal winter out of 110, but poor health improved withrepparttar 109264 good spring to come.
