"There are no keys at Drakesbad," says Billie, our hostess, while introducing us torepparttar lay ofrepparttar 133657 land. "We're onrepparttar 133658 honor system." This applies to everything fromrepparttar 133659 sodas and beer inrepparttar 133660 ice buckets torepparttar 133661 items inrepparttar 133662 concession store. Candy bars, sweatshirts, and books aboutrepparttar 133663 history of Drakesbad - you sign your name and room number onrepparttar 133664 roster and settle up upon your departure.

Not that you'd be in any hurry to leave Drakesbad Ranch. The guests that have visited year after year for generations know that Drakesbad is a place you'll want to spend some time.

It's not easy to get to Drakesbad, but that's part of what makes it so worthwhile. Hidden inrepparttar 133665 southern side of California's Lassen Volcanic National Park, repparttar 133666 ranch is accessible only by a narrow country road that winds over three one lane bridges before losing its pavement before turning up a gravel track. The last few miles are unpaved, but easily navigable by careful drivers. Nope, no need for four wheel drive.

We arrived in time for lunch and dined on a buffet of fresh salads and deli fixings. Meals are included withrepparttar 133667 price of your stay. The staff understands that you might want to spendrepparttar 133668 day hiking inrepparttar 133669 surrounding splendor; they will pack a sack lunch for you if you sign uprepparttar 133670 night before. The kitchen is happy to accommodate any special dietary needs if you let them know before arrival.

After dining al fresco inrepparttar 133671 afternoon sunshine, we headed out to Devil's Kitchen. The lodge sits onrepparttar 133672 edge ofLet's Soak in Volcanic Hot Springs an expansive meadow frequented by dragonflies, mule deer, and red winged blackbirds, to name just a few ofrepparttar 133673 remarkable denizens. We crossedrepparttar 133674 meadow torepparttar 133675 forest and hiked up a moderately easy trail shared with horseback riders. (The ranch maintains a corral of horses and offers rides for all skill levels.) The two-mile hike ends in an array of steam vents and boiling mud pots. Deposits of sulfur coatrepparttar 133676 rocks andrepparttar 133677 air is filled with steam. Yes, there is a strong smell, described to us in advanced by two little boys onrepparttar 133678 trail: "It's really stinky up there!" This is just one of a number of hiking destinations andrepparttar 133679 ranch even keeps a canoe at one ofrepparttar 133680 nearby lakes - but you have to take advantage of that early inrepparttar 133681 season. The lakes are formed by snow melt and evaporate byrepparttar 133682 end of summer.

When we returned torepparttar 133683 ranch, I poured myself a glass of cold lemonade that's available all afternoon outsiderepparttar 133684 dining room. Then we exploredrepparttar 133685 possibilitiesrepparttar 133686 ranch offers forrepparttar 133687 most essential of vacation activities: doing NOTHING. A covered porch offers comfortable seating and a shady place to rest. There's a hammock hanging above a circle of wild trillium. My favorite place wasrepparttar 133688 bench swing onrepparttar 133689 edge ofrepparttar 133690 meadow whererepparttar 133691 deer came to graze. And of course, there's a pool for lazy soaking and sunbathing.

It startedrepparttar minute I was greeted byrepparttar 133656 W San Diego Hotel's valet. A beautiful young woman, with a friendly welcoming smile opened my car door and my "W" experience began!

"Hi, welcome torepparttar 133657 W San Diego, we're so happy that you've arrived!" Fromrepparttar 133658 minute my foot touchedrepparttar 133659 curb in front of this new "style" hotel, I immediately knew something extraordinary was about to occur. The "W" is located inrepparttar 133660 heart ofrepparttar 133661 new residential loft district just south of Little Italy on State and B Streets, in downtown San Diego. San Diego has always been my favorite city inrepparttar 133662 world. Now thatrepparttar 133663 downtown area is undergoing an exciting renaissance, I couldn't wait to experience this new kind of urban lifestyle.

There wasn't a moment that I wasn't surprised, captivated, and thoroughly enthralled withrepparttar 133664 wayrepparttar 133665 "W" capturedrepparttar 133666 casual comfort and beach culture that makes San Diego one ofrepparttar 133667 most quintessential Southern California cities. This place is like none other in all of its amenities.

As you enterrepparttar 133668 lobby you realize that you've found a place where "high touch" meets "high tech," and you can't wait to see, feel and taste what's next!

The visually stimulating "technowall" overrepparttar 133669 lobby bar is a grouping of ten individual television screens measuring six feet high and five feet wide. The video showed a surfer ridingrepparttar 133670 big blue Pacific waves, a vision of perfect symmetry in motion. When I'm atrepparttar 133671 beach I always feel a tremendous sense of awe and wonder atrepparttar 133672 ocean's magnificence. This virtual reality "technowall" instantly, gave merepparttar 133673 ocean experience I craved.

So without fighting for parking, or being mobbed by tourists, I was getting my beach fix just by enteringrepparttar 133674 W San Diego's lobby. The warm and inviting beach colors greeted me likerepparttar 133675 call of a friendly seagull. The plush sofas and extravagant window seats invited me relax and enjoyrepparttar 133676 exhilarating beach sensations The sky blue ofrepparttar 133677 chairs andrepparttar 133678 sandy beige stripes accented by golden tones and sunny images made me feel like a perfect Southern California day. I began to believe that "W" stood for Wow!

As I checked-in, I admiredrepparttar 133679 dramatic round entryway that led me torepparttar 133680 reception area. Behindrepparttar 133681 desk was a clear resin wall embedded with floating shells that served as another visual seascape. As I looked up, I was captivated byrepparttar 133682 soaring ceilings and sheer drapes that framedrepparttar 133683 lobby décor. It was a grand mixture of textures and natural fibers that are usually found in luxurious Mexican retreats but a strong influence of American Modernism eclectically integratesrepparttar 133684 colors and lines creating a marriage of substance and style.

There were two rows of eight tall dark wicker chairs that had individual acrylic game tables that included oversized and colorful checkers, chess, and other unique board games. It was festive and sporty. The lobby décor captured everything I love about San Diego and it gave merepparttar 133685 distinct impression this was one ofrepparttar 133686 most sophisticated and sizzling places to be. Like being atrepparttar 133687 beach, where people watching is a spectator sport, repparttar 133688 lobby ofrepparttar 133689 W was a place to relax and enjoy, watch and wait or see what would happen next?

What happened next for us was that our exuberant valet couldn't wait to take us up to our room! I've never met someone so genuinely happy to be working at a hotel. It appeared as ifrepparttar 133690 W was her home, and she was completely thrilled that we were going to be spending time enjoying her private beach resort. In fact, every hotel staff member we met made us feel like honored guests and it was their pleasure to serve us.
