Don't get a tan to die for Article by Kathy JoyceThis time of year many people are getting ready for their summer holidays and spending more time outdoors in sun. I live in South East of England and even here sun can be very strong in summer months. Global warming is causing ozone layer to become thinner.Between 1978 and 1985 the level of ozone in atmosphere dropped by 2.5%. Ozone offers protection from sun's ultra violet rays. Skin cancer is on increase and is becoming a worrying health problem.Children are most vulnerable as their skin is thinner than an adults and their risk of getting sunburnt is much greater. A lot of people still believe that a tan is a sign of good health and beauty. in fact it is a sign that skin is damaged. Most skin damage resulting in wrinkles is caused by exposure to sun's UVA rays, and often most of damage is done by age of 21. This may not show up until later in life. Sunbeds can be even more dangerous as they have mostly UVA rays which do most damage. The sun has both UVA and UVB rays. The best advice for a healthy, wrinkle free skin is to stay out of sun completely, but that can be very difficult when you're on holiday. Stay out of sun during hottest time of day when sun is at it's strongest. That is between midday and about 4.00pm in afternoon. When you do go out in sun make sure that you have a good high protection sun cream, and a wide brimmed hat as well as sunglasses with UVA protection. Apply sun cream 20-30 minutes before you go out.

Headline news of Canada News Wire, December 17, 2003: Home is source of half of infectious intestinal illnesses, study shows. "The home is source of about half of all intestinal illnesses in Ontario, according to a study published in International Journal of Food Protection. The study, co-authored by Professor Marilyn Lee of Ryerson University and published in June issue of Journal, looked at more than 44,000 reported cases of intestinal illness in Ontario between 1997 and 2001 and found that half had their origin in home."Which room in your home would you believe to be most prone to disease causing bacteria? It is not bathroom as many would suspect but rather it is your kitchen which is a hot spot for microbes. Your common household disinfectant has been found to be effective against bacteria that cause food borne illnesses, and research has been proven that with regular use incidence of food borne illnesses declines greatly. Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist at University of Arizona, Tucson, and his colleagues conducted a study by sampling sites within 15 different homes. They found highest levels of contamination to be in areas that remain damp, such as kitchen sponges and rags, kitchen sinks and kitchen faucet handle. Kitchen counters, cutting boards and refrigerator handles should also be disinfected regularly. They found that regular cleaning had little effect on bacteria but by regularly using disinfectants bacteria level was reduced by 95%. They found main cause of disease causing bacteria in kitchen to be raw meat. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN KEEPING A HEALTHY AND BACTERIA FREE KITCHEN Replace kitchen sponges and rags often, at least once a week. Sponges can be disinfected by putting them in dishwasher. Wash dish rags in washing machine then dry on high heat.
