High Blood Pressure And You

Did you know that nearly two thirds, yes 66% of Americans under sixty have or are onrepparttar verge of high blood pressure and  at least 1/3 do not know it. Having this "silent killer" not only increases there risk of heart disease or stroke but puts them in a higher risk category for hospitalization and death according to a recent study.

There are new guidelines for high blood pressure that have been agreed upon overrepparttar 114506 last several years and you need to know about them. Firstrepparttar 114507 new guidelines are that normal blood pressure is when repparttar 114508 systolic ( top number) is 119 or lower andrepparttar 114509 bottom number is 79 or less. Inrepparttar 114510 recent past we felt that abnormal blood pressure was anything that was 140 or above over 90 or above. Now, people who have this are definitely hypertensive or have high blood pressure.

Whenrepparttar 114511 reading is 120 - 139 forrepparttar 114512 systolic and / or 80 - 89 forrepparttar 114513 diastolic we are to be considered "pre- hypertension. Each of needs to know what our blood pressure reading is, so don't be shy, ask your doctor.

Also, it makes good sense that if your blood pressure is not normal get a blood pressure cuff inrepparttar 114514 drug store and have your spouse, partner or children take it periodically and jot downrepparttar 114515 numbers for your doctor. There is such a diagnosis of "white coat" syndrome" where blood pressure rises when you go torepparttar 114516 doctors office.

Dr Bob's Take: It is so important to know what your blood pressure is and if it is pre-hypertensive or inrepparttar 114517 category of high blood pressure (hypertensive) get it treated and you can make a dramatic difference in your life.

Anti-Oxidant Update

Last month we talked about Vitamin E and repparttar 114518 potential for increasingrepparttar 114519 risk for heart disease. Initially whenrepparttar 114520 first studies came out about 10-15 years ago it was felt that Vitamin E was going to be a panacea for "preventing" heart disease.

Well, there are more studies that are being released which is showing thatrepparttar 114521 herbal remedies that are being touted as anti-oxidants are not proving very effective in preventing diseases like cancer. These are substances like beta carotene, vitamin C,  and selenium. The researchers in France have been looking at this and have concluded that there may be a small benefit for men (none for women) but thatrepparttar 114522 benefits can easily be derived by eating a balanced diet. This study was recently reported inrepparttar 114523 November issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Dr Bob's Take: as an American I like you are looking forrepparttar 114524 "holy grail" which inrepparttar 114525 US is "take a pill and cure it" is notrepparttar 114526 answer here. We need to really eat right and exercise and this will lead to a healthy "us".

Search engine technology is so precise (especially Google™) that conducting a doctor search or a people search can deliver googles of information. Depending onrepparttar 114507 type and quality of information you’re looking after, several different approaches can be used to perform your search. A Doctor Search: How can I find a Doctor? 1.Go to google.com and type inrepparttar 114508 full name of a doctor (i.e. Dr. Jerome Garden),repparttar 114509 city or state, and a specialty field. These keywords gives you a general idea ifrepparttar 114510 doctor has been involved in communities, written publications, media, and so on. 2.Visit your state medical board http://www.mdnationwide.org/choose_a_doctor.htm and find out if your medical board is one ofrepparttar 114511 few who offer free doctor reports. Medical boards let you know if your (the) doctor has ever been disciplined in that particular state and give you doctor licensure status. 3.Next, check outrepparttar 114512 http://www.abms.org/ andrepparttar 114513 http://www.ama-assn.org for proper board certification and organizational status. 4.Finally, visitrepparttar 114514 http://www.fsmb.org/. This organization isrepparttar 114515 governing board of all (MD) State Medical Boards. I highly recommend you visit “FSMB” if you are looking for doctor disciplinary action information, A report will cost you $9.95 each. Depending on what your doctor’s specialty, its always good if they belong to a medical society, for example, a pediatrician might belong torepparttar 114516 American Academy of pediatrics.
