Choose Happiness

Choose Happiness© September 2002

It's a beautiful spring day in Beverly Hills, California. I'm looking out my window at elm trees in full leaf and roses in full bloom, and thinking aboutrepparttar 130908 people who helped me get where I am today.

Mark Johnson wasrepparttar 130909 kind of guy some people love to hate. He was always in a great mood and always had something positive to say. When he saw you, he enthusiastically boomed, “Hello, my friend!” When you asked him how he was, he nearly shouted, “I'm on top ofrepparttar 130910 world!” I was sometimes a little embarrassed by his noisy exuberance, but I was glad he was my friend.

Mark was a unique worker atrepparttar 130911 Phelps Dodge Copper Mine in my home town of Ajo, Arizona. The miners followed him around. Because of his attitude, he was a natural motivator. If one ofrepparttar 130912 guys was having a bad day, Mark was there to help him seerepparttar 130913 bright side of any situation. Once I remember him taking one ofrepparttar 130914 men torepparttar 130915 bank with him after work. I later learned that Mark had personally given over half his check to help that man cover his family's medical bills. It wasn'trepparttar 130916 first time Mark had done this. Many could testify to his generosity.

And those were tough times for copper miners inrepparttar 130917 1970's-with only a decade left beforerepparttar 130918 mine would close, and Ajo would turn into a ghost town

Mark Johnson and I worked inrepparttar 130919 Smelter-the OVEN. Hot enough to melt gold. Hot enough to melt your shoes…it was Hell.

Mark's positive approach to life made me curious, so one day I asked him, "I don't get it! Everyone grumbles and complains aboutrepparttar 130920 hard work, repparttar 130921 heat, andrepparttar 130922 low wages. Everyone but you. No one can be a positive person allrepparttar 130923 time. How do you do it?"

Mark had a quick answer, and a quicker smile, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Mark, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' Don, I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. Don, I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point outrepparttar 130924 positive side of life. Don, I chooserepparttar 130925 positive side of life."

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes, it is," Mark said. "Life is all about choices. Every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to each situation. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: it's your choice how you live life."

My job inrepparttar 130926 mines that summer was challenging. I was only 19 years old after all. I was home forrepparttar 130927 summer to try to make enough money for my sophomore year at Arizona State.

Top Ten Ways to Inspire People to be Their best

Written by Michael Angier

We all know people who are inspiring. But just how does one inspire others? Here are ten simple ways you can inspire people to be their best:

1. Be a good example. People watch what you do more than they listen to what you say. Be someone worth emulating.

2. Care about others. People don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Ask questions. Take a genuine interest in people.

3. Encouragement. Everyone goes through tough times. When you support people and encourage them through these times, you'll be inspiring them to seerepparttar best in themselves and inrepparttar 130905 situation.

4. Be inspired yourself. Look for people, ideas, environments and knowledge that you find inspiring and motivating.

5. Share from your own experience. You have more to share than you realize. Minerepparttar 130906 rich experiences of your life and share your wisdom from your unique point of view. You may berepparttar 130907 only one who can touch someone with your inspiring message.

6. Be vulnerable. Be willing to share your failures as well as your successes. Others will relate to you. They'll understand that they're notrepparttar 130908 only ones with challenges.

7. Tell stories. Facts tell and stories sell. They inspire, too. We learn best from parables and we all need to develop our own inspiring stories.
