Brainstorming with Props - "Goodie Bags" and The WSJ

Written by Bobette Kyle

When developing new strategies or products, coming up with unique ideas is often a struggle. It is one ofrepparttar reasons why, in any industry, there is so much repetition. One way to generate new ideas and "getrepparttar 121281 creative juices flowing" is by brainstorming using props. There are several ways to incorporate props into a session. Two of my favorites arerepparttar 121282 Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and goodie bags.

~~~~~~~~ What is Brainstorming? ~~~~~~~~
According to dictionary.com, brainstorming is: 1) A method of shared problem solving in which all members of a group spontaneously contribute ideas or 2) A similar process undertaken by a person to solve a problem by rapidly generating a variety of possible solutions.
In action, brainstorming should be uncensored - no idea is dumb or impossible. In an organization, throw titles outrepparttar 121283 window. The janitor's ideas haverepparttar 121284 same validity asrepparttar 121285 CEO's. When brainstorming, try to pretend you know nothing about what can and cannot be done. Write down ideas as they come up, no matter how outlandish. The task at hand is to free-associate, generating as many ideas as possible.
~~~~~~~~ Brainstorming with "Goodie Bags" ~~~~~~~~

There's nothing more boring than a sterile conference room. Yet, this is where many group sessions take place. To livenrepparttar 121286 atmosphere, you need a springboard...stimuli to getrepparttar 121287 ideas flowing.

One way to provide stimuli is to gather miscellaneous items into "goodie bags" and have group members sort through them, writing down ideas as they come up. When I worked asrepparttar 121288 seasonal Marketing Manager for Nestlé's Sunmark Division, I used this technique to hold a very productive Easter brainstorm session. I filledrepparttar 121289 bags with small items I thought may stimulate ideas because of their texture, taste, appearance, ingredients, sound, or smell.

Inrepparttar 121290 meeting, I dividedrepparttar 121291 team into sub-groups of three to four people and gave each a bag. After going throughrepparttar 121292 bags, discussing, and writing down ideas, each group gave a small presentation. We came out ofrepparttar 121293 meeting with many more great ideas than we could implement that year - and it was fun!

Goodie bags can also be used to generate ideas for new online product and services as well as for new marketing strategies.

~~~~~~~~ Brainstorming with The WSJ ~~~~~~~~
If you do not have a group to work with, try using a business newspaper as a springboard for generating ideas. The Wall Street Journal (Both WSJ Online andrepparttar 121294 offline newspaper.) is great for brainstorming for several reasons:
- It always contains articles about several industries (Good for coming up with ways to apply new approaches to your own industry.). - The paper has a regular e-commerce section. - There is a daily marketing section. - The editors include a mix of short articles (Good for generating ideas based on what others are doing.) and in- depth reports (Good for ideas that grow from trends.). - Allrepparttar 121295 articles relate in some way to business, but are not strictly news reporting. There are human interest and analytical pieces as well.
4th Quarter Publicity = 1st Quarter Prosperity by Todd F. Brabender-Spread The News PR, Inc.
Asrepparttar year starts to wind down, many businesses and entrepreneurs are making plans and budgets forrepparttar 121280 year 2003. Those plans could include anything from setting up goals for new products to preparing marketing, sales and PR/publicity campaigns. When it comes to your publicity plan, WHEN you launch your campaign can be just as important to what and how you launch.
HOLIDAY PUBLICITY OPPORTUNITIES If your product/business lends itself to increased holiday sales,repparttar 121281 next few weeks are a perfect time to get a publicity campaign launched - givenrepparttar 121282 right media targets. Many holiday issues are already been laid out for magazines, and many other media outlets are feverishly seeking information/pitches on innovative stories forrepparttar 121283 holidays. Some media outlets even reorganize or beef up staff aroundrepparttar 121284 holidays to allow for an increase in stories on products. Have your publicist help you take advantage of this increased media opportunity.
PLANTING PUBLICITY SEEDS NOW FOR 1ST QUARTER RESULTS Some business owners may be ofrepparttar 121285 mindset: "I think we'll wait to launch a publicity campaign until after January 1st." The problem is -- if you wait to launch your publicity campaign untilrepparttar 121286 first ofrepparttar 121287 year hoping for a quick media interest blast in January, you may be in for a quiet month. Keep in mind most media outlets have editorial lead-times of a few weeks to 6 months. Also what some entrepreneurs don't realize is this. Because ofrepparttar 121288 increasing number of publicity pitches media outlets receive, anything you send out is subjected to what I callrepparttar 121289 "media digestion period" - simply put - that is a period of time (sometimes weeks, sometimes months) that it takes media outlets to:
#1) see/understand your release and decide if they are interested; #2) find space ime in their editorial calendar to placerepparttar 121290 article/news story/show segment.
The potential placement is also directly dependent upon how quickly and efficiently your publicist or PR agency can helprepparttar 121291 media securerepparttar 121292 placement. Media relations is crucial. Your publicist's job is to makerepparttar 121293 reporter/editor/producer's job as easy and as effortless as possible - which will lead to quicker and more numerous placements for your business.
