Written by Chris Meehan

Last Sunday sawrepparttar 60th anniversary ofrepparttar 109886 birth ofrepparttar 109887 legendary Bob Marley. Appropriately, thousands of Rastafarians, bedecked in red, gold and green, gathered in Meskal square, Addis Abbaba in Ethiopia, to salute their spiritual fellow traveller and great inspiration.

They formed part of a vast crowd that had assembled to commemoraterepparttar 109888 life and philosophy ofrepparttar 109889 towering figure that was Bob Marley, who died of cancer, aged 36, in 1981. A musical tribute, inrepparttar 109890 form of a free concert, was paid byrepparttar 109891 likes of Youssou N’Dour, Baaba Maal and Angelique Kidjo.

There’s no question that Marley’s music capturedrepparttar 109892 world’s imagination and was instrumental in establishing reggae asrepparttar 109893 pre-eminent world-music fromrepparttar 109894 1970s torepparttar 109895 late 80s. He came to global prominence with his group The Wailers – who initially formed in 1963, securing quick credibility in Jamaica with a number of hits, produced underrepparttar 109896 guidance of Coxone Dodd.

International recognition was slower in coming – Marley even had a spell working on a car assembly line inrepparttar 109897 USA in 1969 – and only materialised once a deal with Island Records had been signed andrepparttar 109898 collaboration with producer Lee Perry establishedrepparttar 109899 sound that came to define Bob Marley andrepparttar 109900 Wailers to millions of fans aroundrepparttar 109901 planet. Withrepparttar 109902 backing vocals ofrepparttar 109903 I-Threes (including Bob’s wife Rita) and a new line-up in 1974,repparttar 109904 Marley bandwagon began to roll in earnest.

1977 and 78 markedrepparttar 109905 release of 2 seminal albums: Exodus and Kaya – which ,in addition torepparttar 109906 critical acclaim they received, were massively successful in commercial terms, too. Island Records calculated that, in 1981,repparttar 109907 extent of Marley’s global sales stood at £100 million.

My First Kiss

Being seven, can be very arkward. You're no longer cute and cuddley anymore, but your still far from being grown up. At seven, I was still my Mom's charge. Wherever she went, I had to follow.

I wasrepparttar strangest little Kid. I wasn't interested in anything. Every thing just seemed to be a bore, and I couldn't understand why I was a little Kid.

My Mom was always losing me. She would make me go shopping with her, and I would think, "oh, more shopping, I'm going to sleep."

So, I would crawl under a display or something and go to sleep.

After a while, allrepparttar 109885 sales girls would be onrepparttar 109886 alert whenever I would walk into a department store, because they knew I was going to find some place to hide away. Butrepparttar 109887 worst place wasrepparttar 109888 sand box.

Whenever my Mom would take me torepparttar 109889 sand box, I would think, "oh, no, I have to be around all those Kids that think this is fun."

I mean after puttingrepparttar 109890 sand in your pail once, repparttar 109891 thrill is gone.

So of course, I would go right to sleep inrepparttar 109892 sandbox. Butrepparttar 109893 ultimate low was Kindergarten. All of these kids playing with little blocks and making a mess with all those crayons. I went right to sleep on that.

The teacher would say to my Mom, "I don't understand your Son, he refuses to stay awake in my class."

I thought, "oh, let me hurry and grow up. Life as a little Kid, is just too boring."

I mean really, I felt like I had nothing in common withrepparttar 109894 junior set. Then, this was almost a bright note.

Someone from a modeling agency noticed me sound asleep inrepparttar 109895 sandbox one day and said to my Mom, "Your Son is really handsome, I would like to model him."

I thought, "hey, that might be interesting."

But no. My Mom said, "I want my Son to have a normal childhood and not have to grow up with cameras everywhere."

I thought, "Mom, are you crazy? I can be a star here. And anyway. What kind of a normal childhood is this that I'm having? Everything bores me."
