August 6th PDB: Smoking Gun or A Dud ?

Written by J.R.

Duringrepparttar 9/11 Commissions dog and pony show hearings, especially inrepparttar 125988 questioning of Dr. Rice, much was made ofrepparttar 125989 now infamous August 6th 2001 Presidents Daily Briefing memo. 9/11 Commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste pressed Dr. Rice aboutrepparttar 125990 PDB memo, which was still classified, as torepparttar 125991 title ofrepparttar 125992 memo and whether it advised of any threats of attacks. Dr. Rice responded that she believedrepparttar 125993 title was "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Insiderepparttar 125994 United States." Dr. Rice then attempted to answerrepparttar 125995 second part of Mr. Ben-Veniste's question when he rudely interrupted her, however Dr. Rice insisted on completingrepparttar 125996 answer torepparttar 125997 question and went on to say that it "did not warn of any attacks insiderepparttar 125998 United States . It was historical information based on old reporting. Mr. Ben-Veniste response was to call forrepparttar 125999 memo's declassification forrepparttar 126000 public to see.

Well, Mr. Ben-Veniste got his wish andrepparttar 126001 memo was declassified on April 10th, with some minor redactions. I readrepparttar 126002 memo, which I had expected to be voluminous, in wake ofrepparttar 126003 wayrepparttar 126004 9/11 commission was touting it. I agree completely with Dr. Rice's description ofrepparttar 126005 memo and what it said.

The memo spoke of clandestine, foreign government, and media reports that since 1997, Bin Laden had wanted to conduct terrorist attacks inrepparttar 126006 U.S., and that in television interviews in 1997 and 1998 that he would followrepparttar 126007 example of World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Yousef ( 1993 WTC bombing) and "bringrepparttar 126008 fighting to America." Okay, so far I'm falling asleep here, this is old news, or as Dr. Rice put it, "historical information based on old reporting."

The memo goes on to say that afterrepparttar 126009 U.S. missile strikes on his base in Afghanistan in 1998, Bin Laden wanted to retaliate in Washington. So far still old news.

Further on inrepparttar 126010 memo an Egyptian Islamic Jihad operative stated that at aboutrepparttar 126011 same time, Bin Laden was planning to exploitrepparttar 126012 operative's access torepparttar 126013 U.S. to mount a terror strike. Still old news.

The memo stated that Bin Laden may have been part ofrepparttar 126014 1999 millennium bomb plot againstrepparttar 126015 Los Angeles International Airport by Ahmed Ressam which was foiled and that in 1998 Abu Zubaydah , Bin Ladens lieutenant, was planning his own attack. It spoke ofrepparttar 126016 1998 attacks againstrepparttar 126017 U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 and how Bin Laden associates surveilled our Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1993, and that members ofrepparttar 126018 Nairobi cell planningrepparttar 126019 bombings were arrested and deported in 1997.

According torepparttar 126020 memo, Al-Qaeda members, some who were U.S. citizens, have resided in or traveled torepparttar 126021 U.S. for years and thatrepparttar 126022 group apparently maintained a support structure that could aid attacks. Two Al-Qaeda members found guilty inrepparttar 126023 conspiracy to bomb our embassies in East Africa were U.S. citizens, and a senior EIJ member lived in California inrepparttar 126024 mid-1990's.

Who is the best qualified candidate for the job?

Written by Robert M. Ziegler

What happened torepparttar days when you voted for candidates because of their “abilities”, and not because of their party affiliation, orrepparttar 125987 popularity they enjoy as a result of expensive media exposure? Have you ever noticed that most Government offices are being held by individuals who are independently wealthy, or who enjoy very strong financial support? This applies to all levels of government, whether it be Federal, State or Local.

Individuals may be extremely well-qualified, but their name may never be added to a ballot simply because they are virtual unknowns who are financially unable to compete in an arena heavily populated withrepparttar 125988 rich and famous. Have you ever noticed how many elected officials are either independently wealthy or own their own business? Unfortunately, that doesn’t make them better qualified than less affluent candidates.
