Adventuring-We All Need to Do it!

Written by Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

Even in times when we are being encouraged to be more careful there is a part of each of ourselves that needs adventure and daring. I certainly know that I have that part of me-it craved travel when I was young and nagged at me until I went to Europe on my own with a friend at 20. And it still nags at me. Fortunately, I have discovered as I age that we can often find adventure right in front of our noses. That is what happened to me this week.

On Wednesday, I went to NYC to do my monthly television show, The Enchanted Self. I tookrepparttar subway (or I should say, I tried to takerepparttar 123747 subway) downtown to Chambers St. to do a bit of shopping beforehand. As I waited onrepparttar 123748 platform I saw one of those truly unique characters that could only be either a true eccentric living in NYC or a character actor. Which was he in his frock coat and derby hat? I was so busy imagining! Suddenly we were onrepparttar 123749 same train together. He asked how to get to Chambers St. and I told him. Then I suggested he crossrepparttar 123750 platform at 14th St. to hoprepparttar 123751 express, which I was about to do. He did and that wasrepparttar 123752 beginning of an adventure. First of all, repparttar 123753 subway car started and we suddenly realized it was going uptown, not downtown. Secondly, he told me that he had to get downtown to Chambers St. to stop in atrepparttar 123754 new home of The New York Sun magazine. He had been hired by them to promoterepparttar 123755 new paper. Ah! He was a character actor. I was so excited.

I asked him whom he was portraying. He told me that he does Teddy Roosevelt, all overrepparttar 123756 country. His name is James Foote. Well, repparttar 123757 next thirty minutes were as if in a dream. He kept going in and out of character. He gave me Teddy's opinions onrepparttar 123758 world as it is today-byrepparttar 123759 way there was plenty of turmoil 100 years ago! He also explained thatrepparttar 123760 White House was called as such by Teddy. Prior to that it had beenrepparttar 123761 executive mansion! He told merepparttar 123762 sad story of how Teddy lost his first wife and mother within a couple of days and how he went intorepparttar 123763 wilderness for a couple of years to restore his sense of well-being and optimism.

The Importance of Thanksgiving

Written by David Leonhardt

Thanksgiving isrepparttar most important holiday ofrepparttar 123746 year.

Oh, sure, Christmas is grand, and I know it has many, many fans. I'm not knocking Christmas, but Thanksgiving is more important. And Easter has its fans, too. Rebirth is a wonderful thing, but I still say Thanksgiving is more important. Yes,repparttar 123747 kids might put in a good word for Halloween. I am sure they enjoyrepparttar 123748 costumes andrepparttar 123749 sugar overdose, but Thanksgiving is more important.

Why?

Becauserepparttar 123750 two most important words inrepparttar 123751 English language are "Thank You". This is true for business success, for social pleasure, even for self-actualization.

For business success, a thank you tells a prospect or partner that you are appreciative of what she has just done. It shows you have a genuine interest in that person andrepparttar 123752 business relationship.

For social interaction, expressing gratitude is equally important to show how you valuerepparttar 123753 other person andrepparttar 123754 social relationship you have with him. Thank you is a bonding phrase.

But thanksgiving is most important on a personal level for our own happiness. This is true for anybody who has ever lived, but it is even more true for us today.

Consider how much we have. More than any of our ancestors, we live inrepparttar 123755 Land of Plenty. We have more than anybody who lived at any time before. And for those of us who live inrepparttar 123756 developed world, we have more than most people on our little planet even today.

I'm not just talking about "stuff". Oh, sure, we have digital color televisions and computers that take us aroundrepparttar 123757 world faster thanrepparttar 123758 speed of sound. And we have 31 flavors of ice cream waiting for us on every second street corner. And we throw out more "junk" than we ever needed to own inrepparttar 123759 first place.

But we have so much more than just stuff. Considerrepparttar 123760 following:

FREEDOM: More ofrepparttar 123761 world lives in a democracy than ever before, and democracy is becoming more open or "democratic" with every year (perhaps in part due torepparttar 123762 Internet).

OPPORTUNITIES: With freedom and affluence comes opportunity. We have more opportunity to make more money, to earn itrepparttar 123763 way we wish, to choose our profession, our location, even our lifestyle. Women have just about reached equality with men in most ofrepparttar 123764 developed world, and more people are able to flee oppressive regimes.

KNOWLEDGE: Which came first, repparttar 123765 chicken orrepparttar 123766 egg? With freedom, comesrepparttar 123767 ability to satisfy our curiosity: knowledge. And with knowledge comes a thirst for freedom. Let's face it,repparttar 123768 idea of "the ignorant masses" has become an anachronism. Evenrepparttar 123769 dumbest among us has more knowledge than most people who lived a couple centuries ago. (I said more "knowledge", not more "wisdom", but that's another topic.)
