A Tragic and Brutal End for our American Horses.

Written by Stephen Murphy

Each time I write or pass along this information, my whole intention is to save at least one more horse. Alone I know I cannot save them all, although I whole heartedly want to, but to reach one more person's eyes, heart and conscious and they respond in kind then I suppose that is just as good. I purposely want these articles to strike a nerve and openrepparttar American publicís eyes torepparttar 145443 senseless practice of horse slaughter. Our American horses of all types are being slaughtered as would any domesticated food animal. Our Founding Fathers designatedrepparttar 145444 horse a "favored" animal which means they are not bred or raised for food, not eaten in our culture. Why? Becauserepparttar 145445 horse is part of American heritage, having played a major role in our historical growth and development. Extensive independent polling shows that voters think it is illegal to slaughter a horse for human consumption; however when informed that it is not, 88%-93% think that it should be. Now taking that in consideration here arerepparttar 145446 alarming facts: Over 3 million American recreational horses have been secretly purchased and slaughtered forrepparttar 145447 foreign markets inrepparttar 145448 last two decades. And because ofrepparttar 145449 lack of disclosure onrepparttar 145450 part ofrepparttar 145451 agents forrepparttar 145452 foreign owned horsemeat industry, people's horses can and have been stolen and their pets purchased under false pretenses. This practice has contributed to crime and consumer fraud. Inrepparttar 145453 United States there are currently two horse slaughter plants in operation, both foreign-owned, both in Texas and a third in Illinois. In addition torepparttar 145454 horses killed inrepparttar 145455 two US-based plants, thousands more are transported under deplorable conditions across our borders into Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered. Horses are often transported for more than 24 hours without rest, water, or food, while unprotected from weather extremes in thin metal-walled trailers. Sick and/or injured horses frequently are forced onto double-deck trailers that were designed for short-necked animals including cattle and sheep. Once atrepparttar 145456 slaughterhouse, repparttar 145457 suffering and abuse continue unabated. Often, horses are left on tightly packed double-deck trailers for long periods of time while a few are forcibly moved off. Callous workers, using long, thick fiberglass rods, poke and beatrepparttar 145458 horses' faces, necks, backs, and legs as they are shoved throughrepparttar 145459 facility intorepparttar 145460 kill box. Due to extreme overcrowding, abuse, deafening sounds, andrepparttar 145461 smell of blood, repparttar 145462 horses exhibit fear typical of "flight" behavior pacing in prance-like movements with their ears pinned back against their heads and eyes wide open. The horses are then herded into shoots which lead torepparttar 145463 stun box. Horses have a very keen since of smell so while they are being driven down this shute they can smellrepparttar 145464 death in front of them. They are shaking and very frightened and knowrepparttar 145465 fate that awaits them. This is a cruel fate for a pet and any horse that has been be-friended by a human and they should not ever end up with this type of fate. What you do have to realize from this time on is that there are very devious buyers out there looking to buy any horse they can get their hands on. They very willing to lie by sayingrepparttar 145466 horse they purchase from you will be taken to a great place to live out it's days with constant good care. These people are only driven by GREED and have BLOOD on their hands from

The Pros and Cons of Vaccinating Your Dog

Written by Rose Smith

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? That's becomerepparttar burning question of many dog owners in this day and age. I'm not a veterinarian, just a regular pet owner like yourself, but would like to impartrepparttar 145369 information I've found regarding regular vaccinations for animals. You can then make your own decision.

I came across much of this information when researching information on vaccinations for children, of all things. What I found shocked me. So, I figured if this is what is being injected into young babies and children, I had to ask myself - what is being injected into our pets? Here is what I've found.

Why Do We Vaccinate Our Pets?

In centuries past, most animals were allowed to haverepparttar 145370 run ofrepparttar 145371 roads with little supervision. Overrepparttar 145372 years leash laws have been enforced and most pet owners keep their dogs leashed or fenced within their yards. If taking your dog for a walk, repparttar 145373 majority of areas require you to keep your pet on a leash (although there are more open no-leash areas springing up). Still, most canines are now supervised or owners face a fine for allowing them to run loose.

Vaccinations are given to "prevent" your dog from contracting particularly harmful/fatal infections from other animals. The vaccinations given come in two forms - killed viruses or non-pathogenic (modified live versions) ofrepparttar 145374 virus. The vaccinations are designed to sensitize your pet's immune system and causes it to produce anti-bodies should your pet be exposed to certain viruses. The modified live vaccinations are "suppose" to provide a longer and better immune response overrepparttar 145375 killed vaccines.

However, in some recent studies it's been found that most vaccinations will provide so-called immunity for 5 years and often longer. I say "so-called" because these vaccines don't actually preventrepparttar 145376 animal from gettingrepparttar 145377 disease and in many cases, may actually cause it.

When Are The Recommended Vaccines Given?

Just like human babies, puppies (and kittens) when first born are provided with a natural immunity from their mothers for repparttar 145378 first few weeks. The initial vaccination shots are then usually given between 8 and 12 weeks of age, with boosters routinely given yearly thereafter.

If you choose to vaccinate your dog - or if it is currently required by law in your area - then You should only vaccinate your dog if it is healthy. If your dog is sick or has a chronic illness, it is advised that you postpone any vaccinations until they are well.

Should your dog require surgery inrepparttar 145379 near future and is due for their shots, you should have them vaccinated several weeks beforehand, not atrepparttar 145380 time of surgery. Their bodies will be under stress at that time andrepparttar 145381 vaccination itself can cause major problems.

If you choose to have standard vaccinations given by your veterinarian, be sure to request that they be administered separately as opposed to a multivalent vaccination (combination). In this way, you can monitor any side-effects that may occur and know which vaccine has caused it.

Government laws will usually require you to vaccinate your dog for parvo virus (a mutation of feline distemper which causes heart disease), canine distemper and rabies. However, repparttar 145382 rabies vaccination should really not be given atrepparttar 145383 same time as other vaccinations.

Many homeopathic veterinarians recommend that you do not vaccinate for leptospirosis, hepatitis or parainfluenza and that you vaccinate only every 2 to 3 years instead of giving them yearly shots in order to reducerepparttar 145384 risk of side effects.

The Problems Associated With Traditional Vaccinations

Controversy has grown over whether to vaccinate or not because ofrepparttar 145385 potential side effects caused by many vaccines. Some are not very effective and others can have short and long-term serious side effects. A study inrepparttar 145386 United Kingdom by Canine Health Concern in March 2001 has found that 1 in 10 dogs suffer from side effects from regular rabies vaccinations which is contradictory torepparttar 145387 vaccine-manufacturers claim that less than 15 adverse reactions occur out of 100,000 companion animals vaccinated.

It's been noted that yearly vaccines can increaserepparttar 145388 frequency and severity of side-effects, most notablyrepparttar 145389 problems that involverepparttar 145390 animal's immune system. Vaccinations are designed to stimulaterepparttar 145391 immune system in an unnatural way and your dog's body could potentially over-react torepparttar 145392 stimulus causing allergies and skin problems. More frightening isrepparttar 145393 fact that repparttar 145394 over stimulated immune system can cause your pet's body to produce anti-bodies against itself (autoimmune disease). Traditional vaccinations have also been shown to increaserepparttar 145395 likelihood of infections in pets from ear infections to bladder problems to cancer.
