So, gettingrepparttar details right is important, but surprisingly enough, repparttar 106395 opposite is also true. By focusing too much on detail, it’s easy to get bogged down in specifics and lose sight ofrepparttar 106396 bigger picture. I have seen many a success turn to failure for exactly that reason. It’s when repparttar 106397 thought, which should be trained on big things, is diverted to attend torepparttar 106398 detail of little things.

The fact remains, that too much attention to details can kill initiative and redirectrepparttar 106399 focus away from important goals. However in saying that, most successful entrepreneurs do understandrepparttar 106400 importance of getting details right. Even if they don’t handlerepparttar 106401 details themselves, they don’t ignore them. In all likelihood, many entrepreneurs will have learnt that lessonrepparttar 106402 hard way.

So, success doesn’t necessarily go torepparttar 106403 person who never makes a mistake. The fact is; those people tend to avoid risks at any cost. Rather, success tends to shine on those who recognize that life is basically a game of percentages. It isn'trepparttar 106404 making of mistakes that's so critical. What’s really important is fixing them when they do happen, without losing site of objectives and goals.

Setting Non-Negotiable Staff Standards

Written by Noel Peebles

Continued from page 1
I’ll give you yet another example. As anyone in retailing will know, meeting and greeting customers is critical. If you ask, “can I help you”, repparttar inevitable response is “no thank you, I’m just looking.” So why ask a question that you know will get a predictably negative response. The answer is you shouldn’t! So, one of my non-negotiable standards was that staff members never, never, ever asked, “can I help you.” Instead staff members were given intensive training on exactly how to meet and greet customers. They were given lots of ideas andrepparttar 106394 flexibility to inject their own personality into what they said. When greeting a customer, staff members were encouraged to begin by talking about anything except making a sale. They could comment onrepparttar 106395 weather, something happening outsiderepparttar 106396 store, repparttar 106397 fashionable coatrepparttar 106398 customer was wearing… anything except making a sale. The reason for this was simple. The first objective was to always try to relaxrepparttar 106399 customer before attempting to make a sale. So “can I help you” was a definite “NO-NO”. I believe that, in setting non-negotiable standards, it is important to putrepparttar 106400 policies in writing. Although verbal instruction will be necessary on occasion, it is much easier to hold people accountable for something that is written. Finally, it is really important to ensure that employees know and fully understandrepparttar 106401 meaning ofrepparttar 106402 non-negotiable standards. They need to be thoroughly trained on what’s required, or how to dorepparttar 106403 particular task. I’m a strong believer in asking people “do you understand” and in some cases following up with “show me.” This way there can be no misunderstanding as to exactly what’s required. Although setting non-negotiable standards might sound very disciplined, it is really about running a business at maximum efficiency. And, in no way should that stop everyone from having a lot of fun. Besides, most employees will try hard to please... and they have a right to know what’s required of them and their boundaries. © Noel Peebles.
