Also don’t forget to be alert and observant each time you leave your home. You must be on lookout for anyone that is still breathing without too much difficulty. These are your cold prospects. Get their names and telephone numbers and attempt to call them to set up an appointment.

When you do manage to set up an appointment, you would arrive armed in same manner as salesperson that came to your door, only to find no-one at home – dark house they call it. Don’t worry they say, just go after someone else, it’s all a numbers game.

When you do manage to catch someone home, they listen to you politely but you read message on their face - how long this is going to take - or they are lounging on sofa, one eye glued to TV and other blankly staring at you.

Does all this sound familiar to you? No kidding, hundreds of individuals have been down this lonely road. No wonder 95% of people quit. After all, any individual with a little dignity can only tolerate so much rejection without developing a serious complex about their abilities.

And yet we all know that building a business that will automatically multiply itself without you physically having to be there 24/7 is by far easiest way to success.

Looking for a business model that never requires you to attend meetings, make personal contact with complete strangers, never leave comfort of your computer…then you have just stumbled into wonderful world of e-commerce. Hundreds of different business models abound and cool thing about them is that you can work more than one at same time. You can develop multiple streams of income and start living life salesman in my article only dreamt of.

At social events, accountants and lawyers had it easy. "I am an accountant," says it all.

I was not so fortunate.

"I am a consumer advocate," I would say.

"So what do you do?"

"Well, I talk to media and to government and to industry," I would explain.

"Ahaaa... and I talk to tooth fairy. So what do you do?"

Now, I have an even harder time when somebody asks what I do. Most people have no clue what search engine optimization is, which is my main "career". Few people really understand what freelance writing is, except if they read a freelance writer's article in a magazine . I don't even try to mention that I run three websites and do affiliate marketing. But people do understand what it means to be an author.

"Wow, you wrote a book on happiness? Congratulations. So when's your next book coming out?"

Which is when I have to explain how a book really doesn't feed a family, and if I took time to write a second book, it would take time away from search engine optimization and affiliate marketing...

"Huh, what's that?"

"Never mind," I answer. "I'm a stay-at-home dad." Which also is true. People might look at me weird, but at least they understand me. Or, so they think.

All of which brings me back to that question I never answered when I was young: what do I want to be when I grow up? I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer to find out. Like when I grow up.
