Lou works with a couple of local surfers who assist him in his classes. Ryan is a 22-year-old surfer gal who sings in a band when not surfing and has a smile that literally bursts out of her when particularly happy surf thought breaks over her mind.

Billy is a 27-year-old business owner (G-Bolt, a company that makes and sells accessories for wake boards) who assists Lou in his spare time for some extra geld. He is also constantly smiling; actually his face looks like it hurts when he isn't grinning

These two were like allrepparttar surfers I met in that it was easy to see that one thing a surfer loves is anything to do with surfing. They are constantly looking forrepparttar 137736 next wave, a tireless and endless pursuit that seems to them like a natural extension of breathing.

At one point in my day I had asked Ryan if she ever got tired of talking about surfing. She looked at me like I was insane and explained that it was something inside of her, "a drive." Lou had recently been instructing a few Air Force Lieutenants, one of whom observed to him that he was constantly inrepparttar 137737 water, working in it all day, then playing in it; his response to this was that they should think of him as, "an ocean going mammal. I come out ofrepparttar 137738 ocean to feed, sleep and one other thing. Then I'm back inrepparttar 137739 water." These guys live to surf and when your class starts you will feel that desire coming off them in waves, and I guarantee you, it is infectious.

My beginners class started with a hefty dose of safety instruction. Ryan was very clear and adamant aboutrepparttar 137740 potential dangers to be faced inrepparttar 137741 water. Although I never felt any fear of any ofrepparttar 137742 things covered when I was actually inrepparttar 137743 water, they do an excellent job of makingrepparttar 137744 possible dangers very clear to those who know nothing ofrepparttar 137745 ocean.

Everything was covered; from holding your board properly, moving around with it safely inrepparttar 137746 water, and any potentially dangerous ocean fauna you might bump into. Ryan had an instant rapport withrepparttar 137747 kids, and although she allowed their occasional digression, she was expert at bringing them back torepparttar 137748 task at hand and keeping their attention. If I were going to put my kid into a school to learn how to surf, these folks would berepparttar 137749 ones I'd want teaching them; safety was a huge priority and yet I don't feel thatrepparttar 137750 kids ever thought they were being talked down to. Ryan almost went out of her way to scare us all a bit, to make us know we were participating in a sport that could be dangerous, and in a potentially perilous place as well, although it was all a bit overplayed for awareness:

The morning is bitterly chilly and everyone is huddled in warm-ups over swimsuits, sipping hot coffee fromrepparttar local's favorite before hitting-the-water hangout. I wrap my hands completely around my cup of Mexican Baja Java or something of that sort to keep my fingers warm.

The sun makes its break fromrepparttar 137735 clouds and it's hotter than blazes! San Diego likes to tease. Each morning it looks like there will be a downpour like you've never seen and thatrepparttar 137736 whole day will be ruined. But as usual, repparttar 137737 sun makes its debut and viola! instant year 'round paradise! However, a word of warning for you. Once again, San Diego likes to tease its visitors. Don't letrepparttar 137738 hot sun fool you for it doesn't warmrepparttar 137739 Pacific Ocean. Trust me, I found outrepparttar 137740 hard way! On a previous trip, after traveling for hours to get torepparttar 137741 coastline, I mad-dashed it and plunged in headfirst only to facerepparttar 137742 cruel reality thatrepparttar 137743 water temperature was only inrepparttar 137744 '60s and notrepparttar 137745 '80s ofrepparttar 137746 Atlantic and Caribbean that I'm used to.

Our driver Don from Beach Limo pulls up in his shiny-as-glass car right on time. They say not to judge a book by its cover and this is definitely true with Don. He looks like one ofrepparttar 137747 lead characters inrepparttar 137748 movie, "The Godfather", but is as gentle as a teddy bear with a great sense of humor. My daughter Candy plays withrepparttar 137749 car's controls as Don patiently drives us torepparttar 137750 shores of La Jolla.

Surf Diva is located a short walk fromrepparttar 137751 beach. We hearrepparttar 137752 commotion of construction workers as they race to beatrepparttar 137753 deadline of Surf Diva's new expansion torepparttar 137754 2,000 square foot location just below their current boutique.
