Note: Linux abstracts every device attached your computer, includingrepparttar hard drive and floppy drive as a file. Files inrepparttar 107817 /dev/ folder are equivalent to device driver files in Windows. Linux provides device files for most common devices, but if you install an uncommon device, you may need a special device file.

After mountingrepparttar 107818 drive, you can accessrepparttar 107819 floppy disk. Before removingrepparttar 107820 disk, you have to "unmount"repparttar 107821 drive. If you find yourself frequently mounting and unmounting drives, you can right-click on "Disk Manager" inrepparttar 107822 menu and select "Add this launcher to panel".

When you installed Linux, information about devices on computer was stored inrepparttar 107823 file /etc/fstab. Ifrepparttar 107824 device that you want to mount was not configured during installation, userepparttar 107825 LinuxConf utility to configurerepparttar 107826 device before you mount it.

For example, if you wanted to configure a floppy drive to access DOS floppy disks, insert a DOS floppy disk intorepparttar 107827 drive, then log in as root and open LinuxConf - Main Menu | Programs | System | LinuxConf. Inrepparttar 107828 LinuxConf window Config tab, click on "+" next to "File systems" to open that branch. Under "File systems" click on "Access local drive". The "Local volume" windows appears.

Inrepparttar 107829 "Local volume" window, click onrepparttar 107830 Add button. The "Volume specification" window appears. Inrepparttar 107831 "Partition" text box type /dev/fd0. Then click onrepparttar 107832 drop down button forrepparttar 107833 "Type" text box and select msdos. Inrepparttar 107834 "Mount point" text box type /mnt/floppy. Click onrepparttar 107835 "Accept" button. Then click onrepparttar 107836 "Mount" button.

Note: To mount a partition or drive you have to use an existing subdirectory asrepparttar 107837 mount point. By convention, drives userepparttar 107838 /mnt/ subdirectory asrepparttar 107839 mount point.

To copy files to and fromrepparttar 107840 mounted floppy disk, drag and drop them to and fromrepparttar 107841 directory /mnt/dosfloppy just as you would any other directory. ----------------------------------------------------------- Resource Box: Copyright(C)2002 Bucaro TecHelp.
