What if your business doesn't sell food?

Vendors at trade shows are spending huge sums on decking out booths and rented suites with food themes. A company I worked for spent weeks developing a chocolate theme. Chocolate everything, down to huge printed photographic murals of chocolate chips adhered to walls. During trade show they hired girls to pass out printed menus of tantalizing chocolate desserts in company's suite. Did it work? Agents hoarded into suite. Listening to a pitch on long distance service was simply more enjoyable while nibbling chocolate truffles. They did a booming business that day.

The winter holidays offer an ideal time to tempt browsers into store with smell of hot cocoa. A cool cup of lemonade is a fun way to attract shoppers to a summertime sidewalk sale. I think there's nothing nicer for weary shoppers than a discreet table set up with coffee and cookies. It's a lovely gesture and one of cheaper efforts you could ever make at developing good will and customer loyalty.

What major mistakes do you see Internet entrepreneurs make?

[Mark]: Wow - there are so many. The biggest one is: "making your site for you rather than for your customer." So many people build sites that are shrines to themselves. Who cares, right?

People in general don't care about you - they care about themselves. You've got about 2 seconds to get your visitor's interest - or he will turn around and leave!

[Marty]: Do you have any other advice to those wanting to build successful online businesses?

[Mark]: You bet - you're probably going to hear from everyone that you're crazy. Don't listen to this!

I can't begin to tell you all of "authoritative" statements I've heard from nay-sayers:

"Your business model will never work."

"It's too late to start a new business on Internet." (I heard this early this year when I started ROIbot.)

"It costs millions of dollars to do business online" (A lie perpetuated by those charging millions to set up online businesses! Doing business on Net is cheap if you do it right!)

If I had listened to any of these statements I wouldn't have nearly as much money as I do now.

And those that have said such things to me are making just what they've always made. Bottom line.
